Thanks .

Obviously, there is no AE lock in manual... So I'm a bit confused on what you mean.

Are you asking about AE lock, or AF lock?

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

I think this could be the source of confusion. AE lock is meaningless in manual mode, but the camera is still capable of auto focus lock. Perhaps the OP is trying to use the * button for AF lock, which is possible using the CFs on the MarkIII.

Yes, I agree..
In that case (focusing with * button, via C.Fn.), AF-ON button will function as AE lock.

On the Mark III, you can initiate automatic focusing by pressing on the AF-ON button (to the right of the "*" button) without the need to set any custom function. But if you prefer pressing the "*" button instead of the AF-ON button, you can swap those two buttons with C.Fn IV-2 set to 1.

If you want the Mark III to behave like the older cameras which have C.Fn-04 set to something other than 0 to remove focusing from the shutter button, you can use C.Fn IV-1 to do the same.

But in all cases, the * shown in the viewfinder has nothing to do with focus lock. It signifies exposure lock only, and that's something that's inherent in manual mode, so there's no special button for that when using M mode.
