A couple shot from Miami win over Arizona on Saturday 6/6/08, not the best shots but thought I would show them anyway. They’re all hand head with EOS1 MIIn, 70-200 2.8 IS, or 1.4 extender, and shot at ether 800 or 1000 ISO.

1) The shot is a little soft, the AF picked up the runner’s back over the first baseman

Tough conditions to shoot in. Really like #6, the angle is cool, caught the ball leaving the bat. Very nice! Thanks for sharing.

Jeff,

I've shot at Mark Light before, and the lighting isn't the greatest at night. IIRC, I had to be at ISO1600 and even 3200 at f/2.8 for some places on the field to get any decent shutter speeds (like around 1/500s at best). In fact, I gave up shooting there at night entirely because of this, and I have long f/2.8 glass.

The fact that you put a 1.4X TC on your 70-200 f/2.8 pretty much meant you doomed your shots from the beginning, and also meant you would have needed to be WAY higher in ISO than 800 or 1000 (can't get the EXIF from your files 'cuz it's been stripped so I can't tell what your shutter speeds were - no need to do this when you're hosting the files on pBase - if you did a "Save for Web", there's no need to do this, either, when hosting externally). Had you raised your ISO, you could have recovered some of the image quality by running the shots through noise reduction program.

You got some decent timing on several of your images, but they are all underexposed and softer than they need to be. It also looks like you tried to fix the under-exposure in post processing?

I would have removed the 1.4X and shot the 70-200 at 200mm, and bumped the ISO at least to 1600, and concentrated on action within the limits of the lens. In other words, don't shoot zoomed in all the way, then crop the shots after already zooming in. You can get away with trying to make the 70-200 act like a "280 f/4.0" by attaching a TC during day games, but at night, there's no way this is going to produce acceptable results unless you're adding artificial light (as in flash or strobes), which is not allowed with baseball.

Some games you just don't have the right equipment, so it's best to just sit back and enjoy the game.

Thanks for sharing.

Go 'Canes!

Dmwierz

You’re assessment about my shots is dead on. I’ve added EXIF info. UM did put up new lights at Mark Light about 2-3 years ago. IMO the lights are still bad so I usually don’t shot at night after dusk. But when I do, I try not to go over 1000 ISO because of the noise with my camera.

1000-3200 ISO range is what I recall the regular Pro sport shooters at Mark Light using at night, what I’ve seen of their work has very little noise at that ISO, But they all have newer models camera with better noise reduction than mine

I only cropped 10-20% off ; also the 1.4 TC is new I just want to test it out.

Jeff

2 things: Boost the ISO and use PP to reduce resulting noise (look up software like Noise Ninja). Also, you really should have either a 300 2.8 or a 400 2.8 to shoot baseball at night.

PS: Where were you located in the stadium? I think I saw you on ESPN

Likely so was setting at home plate, front roll, and third base side in the 6th to 8th. One guy’s in-group I usually set with got the ticket from his broker for the whole weekend. When him and his wife when to set with the other in the regular group (The Walk-Him Club), I pop down to front row. Have been think about that 300 f2.8 for sometime
