wow ...
amazing photo

can i ask why u use iso 400 ?
is it because of the teleconverter stacking to get more light in ?

i use 400d + 70-200 2.8 is + 2x @ 400mm
iso 100, EV -4 (achievable using -2 bracketing) and get this result:

Nice shot with the 70-200 + 2x!

Given the sweet Av of the combo, I use the lowest ISO that will yield an acceptable shutter speed to freeze the subject.

meaning aim around 1/100 to 1/200 for shutter speed?

reading from the 2 previous replied, if I am using 70-200mm & 2x, largest aperture is f5.6 .. does that mean i shoot at around f9 or even f11 ?

(i tried f9 or f11, but the moon becomes too bright and overexposed resulting in lack of details. i probably can compensate this in the RAW settings)

thx for the help... i've seen your blog & pbase page ... crazy crazy gear u got there.

For taking shots of the moon use the Sunny 16 rule. There is no reason that your shots at f/9 or f/11 should be overexposed if your shots at f/5.6 are correctly exposed.

Use M mode and start with 1/ISO for f/16. Work your way down from f/16 to your desired aperture, so f/11 is down one stop, f/9 is down 1 2/3 stop. Raise your shutter speed to correspond with those figures so f/11 should be 1/200, and f/9 should be 1/320.

I use the following exposures as starters, then fine-tune the values after histogram review.

1. Full moon - "Moony 11", or f/11, ISO 100 and 1/ISO shutter speed.

2. Half-moon - "Half-Moony 8", or f/8, ISO 100 and 1/ISO shutter speed.

As Mike posted above, some people get by with the "Sunny 16" rule (f/16, ISO 100 and 1/ISO shutter speed). I find Sunny 16 to be on the bright side (recoverable in RAW though), so I expose a bit darker.

For the first post (100-400 + 4x TC), the exposure settings were f/28, ISO 320 and 1/25 sec. This exposure is the same as f/8, ISO 100 and 1/100 sec..... the "Half-Moony" rule.

Thanks all for the comments. :)
Sorry, it seems I don't have a shot online with the Sigmonster + 4x TC. ???
I do have one with a 2.8x TC (100% crop)

Great stuff as always Romy.

Noticed that one was done in 2006 on 1DmkII, just wondering if you think you could do better now with 40D and live view....?

Not better IQ perhaps, but easier MF job because of 10x zoom of LV.

Here's the most detailed moonshot I was able to capture so far, courtesy of the 40D + Sigmonster + 2x, 1600 mm:

"I'm curious to see what the much sharper 400 5.6L can do at moonshots....

Regards,

Romy"

I took some moon shots tonight with the 400mm/5.6 + 1.4x TC mounted on a 40D using Live View + MF. I'm not sure what the results are yet, I'm at work and I forgot my CF reader. I'm gonna check out the shots when I get home in the a.m. I also managed to get a few shots of the moon 10 minutes before moonset- it was nice and red. I'm really curious to see how they turned out. I had to open the aperture up to f/8 and turn the Tv down to about 1/40th so there was enough light for Live View's exposure simulator.

Tonight I'm going to have another go at it but this time I'm going to run Live View through my laptop and focus remotely via the laptop. I get home from work in about two hours, I'll post as soon as I PP.

Thanks for the tips Romy. Good stuff.
