A friend of mine has a d300 and a sb600. He goes into his menu as selects commander mode and suddenly he can fire off his flash remotely.

This setting is called the Nikon Creative lighting system.

How can I replicate this with my camera without purchasing two flashes or the ST-E2?

You can't do it with only the camera & flash...but there are plenty of other options. A good portion of posts in this section are relevant to this...so grab a coffee and start reading :)

Selling his camera and flash and buying a Nikon one would replicated that function fairly well.

Yes, there are several versions of the hack. A few that come to mind are called 550EX, 580EX, 580EX II and ST-E2.  ;)

Thats a pretty crappy hack considering you'll need at least 2 of those units to pull it off.

I detect buyer's remorse. You saw something your camera can't do and you want it. You have options, one of which is sell and buy a Nikon.

Yep.. I just got a 580EX II and was talking to my Nikon friend. He was sure there was a way to have the Speedlite trigger when it sees my pop-up flash go off, but apparently not. Oh well.

Sell the Canon. Switch to Nikon. It's the wave of the future.

Use an optical slave on the 580EX II and FEL lock on the camera. Not practical but it works.

1) RTFM.
2) Repeat Step 1.

If you don't need TTL or high speed sync, then you can get some cactus v2s triggers for pretty cheap and fire your flash wirelessly....
