I found out about this local model get together

11 models are going to be there.

It's cost was $50 bucks, but I figure it is worth it.

The shoot is going to be outside, around a pool, models being in Bikinis.

Now I hope I can get some decent shots.

I have my Canon EF 50mm F/1.4 Lens coming in tomorrow.

Hopefully this will be worth it.

What other equipment could I get on such short notice?

Any tips?

Tucson I'm pretty sure.

I probably wont be able to source a flash that fast.

This may be ugly :(

If it's going to be outside by a pool, then you are going to be fighting shadows on the face all day long. If need be, use your popup flash (if you are close) to help lift the shadows (you will be limited by 1/200 shutter speed, so make sure you stop your lens way down to not overexpose).

You could source a flash that quick but it would be costly. You could rent it, I'm sure. There is no doubt in my mind Tucson is big enough to have at least one camera rental place. Rent a flash and a diffuser, you will want it for fill flash to eliminate harsh shadows.

I am super cool n' stuff.

Well yeah I know I can buy something and get it quick.

I don't know of any local rental places though... I have looked.

Make sure you take your zoom as well. 50mm will seem very short if you are shooting models across on the other side of the pool, for example. You may also want to get some tight shots and shut out surplus distracting backgrounds.

A 50mm lens on a crop body will get you a full length shot of a 5'5" model (without heels) from about 12'. If you want a tighter shot than that you don't want to be in her face, or distorting features through an odd perspective.

I would hope that they will have some equipment there for you to use, so you could try backlighting them & using a white card or reflector to bounce some light back into them. Or you could buy a 30X40" white card at any art store for about $5.
Try this for exposure: First set the f-stop & shutter speed you need. Then adjust the ISO. Need an exposure crutch?

This shows how the subject can affect the exposure & why manual keeps me worry free: Post #47

Or you could move one into the shade: Angeline outdoors

See if you can get a model release signed: When do I need a Release?

Say I get the 30"x40" board, where do I place it when taking shots?

Thanks!

Have a browse through the tutorials here. They may give you some ideas.

http://www.photoflexlightingschool.com …rtrait_Outdoor/index.html (external link)

Basically, you use the white board to reflect light back onto your model to fill in shadows and reduce contrast. If you are outdoors in sunlight you will not want your models squinting into the sun so you will likely have them backlit or sidelit. Either way, your popup flash is going to struggle to compete with the brilliance of the daylight in order to fill in on its own. The white board will need to be close to the model and positioned/angled so that it gives you the lighting look you want. Really you will need an assistant, or a stand, or for the model to hold it herself. It's unlikely you will get away with just resting it against something. You might also find it useful in order to provide some shade - you know what they say about open shade for photographing people, so make your own :)

I know studio lighting is not the same but again, you may learn something from the lighting setups here. Just get an idea of the purpose of the reflector to provide fill. If you are shooting very early morning or late evening you may ge away with using the sun as your main light from the front/side and the reflector to fill the shadow side. Other things that could be used as reflectors are are existing surfaces, like a white wall, for example, or reflected light off the pool.

Great suggestion, if they allow you to bring one! It would speed up your shots without getting in other shooters way too much.
