Playoff game last night - and used the pre-game warmup as a test for the extender and 120-300. No question you really need alot of sun because it significantly reduces AF, which is why I limited my test to the pre-game, as it was already late at 6 pm, and it was a play-off game (my team lost - which was sort of expected).

Not a tremendous shot, but just a quickie test of what the extender can do, I was clear across the field, really very, very far away when I took this shot:

hopefully I'll get a really sunny day to fully test it. I got what could have been a great son of my husband instructing my son, but hubby's eyes were closed, and I couldn't see that in the viewfinder. That I think is one drawback of the extender, you can get stuff from pretty far, but I might not see everything I am supposed to.

Pat, don't understand why you light wasn't enough. Your exif shows f5.6 and ss of 1/4000 at ISO640. That's plenty of light IMHO. Sunsets are around 8:30 these days.

Bobby -

Even at that light, I noticed the AF slowing down, so because it was a playoff game and I wasn't confident of what I was doing, I decided against using the extender during the game. As it was, without the extender, towards the middle of the game around the 3-4th inning, I had to quit. Even the 70-200, with the extender, the AF is noticeably slower, so my feeling was why risk it in receding light at a playoff game. As it turned out, the boys had a blow out and there were no significant plays or opportunities for great shots for our team (it was a bad loss for us), and I could have risked it. Unfortunately, I frequently am too cautious.

I do agree the TCs slow down AF, lot more on xxD series than 1 series and more with the zooms than with the primes.
