You sure need a monopod with a 400 2.8 that s a big piece of glass.

For sports I have to agree with everyone else. I usually bring my monopod with me for sports, but generally only use it if I am getting tired.

For nature and landscape I recommend a good tripod. I use a Giottos 9360 and love it. It is a good sturdy tripod that is reasonably priced. It is a bit on the heavy side compared to other options though.

All the sports photographers that I have worked with use
a monopod.

because they've learned to work smarter rather than harder. anytime you can use a monopod you'll get more keepers and you'll get physically less taxed.

doh :D.

I have the Gitzo GM5540. It is expensive but it is well worth it.

I have the 5540 also - its a great stick. Definitely use a monopod rather than a tripod for sports - you're much more mobile and can follow the action a lot easier. I use it more for indoor stuff where it gives me a bit more stability when shooting at slower shutter speeds

a monopod for the 70-200 isnt needed

It is all relative isn't it? Sure you might not need a monopod. but if one wants to use it there is no reason not to.

Have you tried holding a 70-20 f/2.8 up to your eye for 90 minutes, without support?

Yep, more than that, I handheld mine for about 2.5 hours last week at a sports carnival type thing

And I have tried using a monopod for sports, but found myself too slow with it
