You cant (really) replace the on (in?) camera flash. So, yes, it is off camera (well, not really, it goes in the hot shoe). I'm sorry if that didn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense, I'm tired watching the Celtics game :D
EDIT: About the pics you posted, the focus seems like it is on the pants, not his face.

I'd try to get an angle where the big tree wasn't directly behind. Good start though.

Well try setting up a composition. Then, select the focus point where you think the head will be as they roll through.

I don't think they're out of focus, I think you just have motion blur. If not using flashes, set your shutter at 1/500 or 1/1000. Also you really need to work on framing and not just point-and-shooting, think about the photo and compose it before you take it.

ok, now i know, i gotta think like a real photographer. If i make it 1/500 or 1/1000 i obviously need to bump up the iso right? do you chose one focus point all the time or do you use ai focus(whatever)?

thanks for the tips

AI focus or AI servo if I'm shooting a sequence.

And I'd shoot at 1/500 or 1/800 mainly, just keep your aperture open and only bump up the ISO if necessary, do it to 400 maximum. Just keep an eye on your light meter.
