Great Spotted Woodpecker, taken just a few hours before the young flew the nest.

She's a beauty! Nice shots. What lens were you using? I see the focal length is 800mm.

Thanks for the comments all, much appreciated.

Liz,
lens 400 f2.8,exif reads 800mm actual was 1120mm ( 400 x 2 x 1.4 extenders stacked ) Exif also says no flash yet it was ! only explanation i can think of is, i had a 430 ex off camera, wireless remote and it did not report back to the camera.

I see what you mean about only the female at the nest, your shot's are almost as good as mine lol :0) Really nice set you have there, I went back to my site the next day armed with the 600mm but they had all flown away.

I'll try anything once, twice if I like it

I really love that last one especially. I miss the old greater spotted woodpeckers (having moved to America recently) and it's nice to see them again.

Thanks again for the comments,
last one is my favourite too though a little bit gruesome as its a newly hatched Blue or Great tit thats in its beak, robbed from a box and feeding to its own.

Yes indeed nature is surely a beautiful but cruel thing at times.
