After going through a few P&S over the last year or two, I think I've finally found the perfect 'snapshot' camera to accompany my dSLRs.

I've had the S3-IS for awhile.. and that was truly a great camera. The ergonomics were good, the level of control was good, the image quality was good and the movie mode was great (love the dedicated movie button and the ability to optical zoom/re-AF/auto-meter while recording). It was an extremely versatile camera. So what was the problem? Well, I just never used it that much since everytime I was going to take out such a relatively large P&S, I would just take the dSLRs instead. So sadly, the S3-IS went.

Then a few months later, I got the G9. Again, the level of control was great, although the ergonomics weren't as good. But a few things ticked me off - the inferior movie mode, the playback interface and the relatively large size. Yes, I knew it was going to be large.. but somehow I wanted to try this camera out so bad that I convinced myself it was universally pocketable. So off the G9 went. Luckily a friend wanted a camera at the time and I got a good price for it.

So now having tried two of some of Canon's highest ranged P&S and being dissatisfied, I needed to think about this a bit further. What exactly was my problem with finding the ideal compact? Well, it was pretty simple.. all I needed was something as pocketable as possible which could do movies. Controls were beside the point and that's where I kept making mistakes. I kept getting lured towards high-end P&S models with plenty of controls and the latest technology.. but I never needed that in a P&S. All I ever needed to do when I was using P&S was just to point and shoot!

So today, I found myself buying an IXUS. To be honest, I would have never imagined myself buying one of these cameras, since I've always been a control freak. But I have found myself to be quite happy! It is small and light (infact lighter than I expected), the image quality is respectable for such a small sensor and the movie mode is satisfactory.

So finally, I think I've settled on a P&S.. the IXUS 80IS! If anyone has any comments or questions about this camera, feel free to ask!

EDIT: PS - that STUPID Direct Print button.. ugh, why did they have to make that button so huge.

lol Glad you like it!

That's why my P&S of choice is a Fuji F40. The fact that it slips in my pocket makes up for any other shortcomings. :)

!

After a day with this thing.. nothing has changed, except regrets over my choice of colour. I chose dark brown for the sake of keeping inconspicuous in public, but the colour makes it just look like a big hard poo which can take photos.

On the plus side, nobody else will know it can take pictures.

That reminds me, I should hurry and go patent my idea picture-taking poos. I would hate for someone else to steal my highly profitable idea.
