Just got a new MK III. Went to upload images from my first shoot with it and PS wont open them. It keeps telling me it does not recognize the file format which is CR2 the same from my MK II... any ideas?

I know that CS2 wouldn't open my files from my 40D when the 30D was no problem. I would search for an update but you might need CS3.

You typically have to open the files in RAW converter first (Adobe RAW, Lightroom etc).

I take it you have a RAW program loaded and when trying to open it says it can't recognize?

Older versions of PS won't work with newer cameras, you can work around by converting to Adobe's DNG format. This is one reason I like Bibble.

I have CS3. I never had issues in the past opeing CR2 files from my MK II directly into PS before. Seems kinda strange that now I can't. I dont want to convert the files either. I want to open them in the RAW editor in PS and convert them after I've made my tweaks

As you're finding out all CR2 files are not the same. In fact, every camera has a slightly different version of a CR2 file which is why they typically can't be opened unless the RAW converter adds support for that specific file.

Unfortunately for you the Canon Mark III is not supported in Photoshop CS2; your options would be to use Canon's software, download the free DNG converter from Adobe and convert the CR2 files to DNG, use Lightroom, or upgrade to CS3.

If you have CS3 then you need to update your version of the ACR plug-in. Support for the Mark III was added in version 4.3.1; most likely you have an older version of the plug-in.

My T1i is giving me the same problems with CS3 and CS2 on two different computers. I went to the Adobe site and downloaded the converter, but it would be great to know of a way to eliminate that conversion step.

The highest version of Adobe Camera Raw that is compatible with CS3 is ACR 4.6. Unfortunately ACR 4.6 does not support the T1i.

If I recall correctly the highest version supported by CS2 is ACR 3.6.

Your choices are to either do the RAW conversion outside of CS3 with something like DPP or convert your RAWs to DNG format.

The ability to convert T1i RAWs was part of the ACR 5.4 update. ACR 5.x is only compatible with PS CS4.

There is a third alternative, but it means putting your hand in your pocket.

Wow! I've put all kinds of spending on hold for a while, but that is a nice price!

Yes it is, that's what I paid for it with my NAPP discount.

Thanks for the info on compatibility! I just picked up a new lens so the Adobe upgrade will have to wait. Looks like I'll be converting the slow way for a while.

Follow up question...
Does converting to .dng format lose any information? I'm wondering if it is worth keeping the .CR2 files of it is a waste of memory space.
