Grabbed an immaculate MkIII on Friday to move up from the MkII, hope to start throwing some images in here as soon as I get the chance to get out and take some.

How do yall have your AF setup as far as using the shutter release button or the rear AF-On button?

Same thing as you described above... Use the 'AF-On' for continuous focus lock on your subject while using the shutter button to take a capture...

:D

PS. Congrats on the acquisition and welcome to the thread... You may want to update your signature... Hehehe...

Ok good deal. I was wondering about that since I never really used back button focus on the MkII and wanted to start using it on the MkIII.

Haha good call, thanks Butch

Nice one Butch. What species is that? We really dont see more than the Rubys here.

Got my new RRS L-Plate in the mail, so time get out and get some shots!

Anyone use one of the RRS tripods? I have a Gitzo currently, but it was from before the systematic came out, so i cant fully remove the center column and have had issues with the ballhead loosening so I am not overly confident carrying the tripod with the camera still attached. Thoughts?

Thanks for the comment, Jason... Unfortunately, I don't know what species it is... It was my first outing shooting hummingbirds... Sorry about that...

Congrats on the RRS L-plate... I have those on both of my 1D-series bodies... I personally don't have an RRS tripod, but my setup is Gitzo 3-series (3530SLV) tripod with an RRS BH-55 ball head unit... Which Gitzo legs do you have?

:)

Thanks, I love their plates and quick release clamps. Sucked that the one from my 1DsMkII was different and then the ones for the gripped 40Ds are obviously different, oh well haha.

I have the Gitzo GT3541 (external link) with Arca-Swiss Z1 (external link) ball head.

^ Duh... I feel stupid... Should've read your signature... Hehehe... Anyhoo... I had a 3rd market CF tripod similar to yours (Amvona/Dynatran)... Here are a few samples:

1D2N + 400 2.8L II 'non-IS' with Amvona CF tripod and ball head unit

1Ds2 + 500 4L IS (Mark 1) with same support as above

The support was decent enough for heavy glass... If I recall correctly, the ball head unit had a maximum load weight of 50lbs, as did the CF legs... I did remember leaving the camera/lens on the support while I walked around during photoshoots and such, but after awhile, the ball head unit started to slow slip... Even with tightening on the primary and secondary security knobs, it moved just enough where I wasn't comfortable with it anymore... Eventually I upgraded both the legs and ball head unit to what I have now...

If you feel, at any moment, that your support system (legs or head unit) is losing its ability to handle your load weight, I personally would start researching for something that will give you 110% confidence that your gear is safe on it...

So I have plenty of confidence in the ball head itself, the issue seems to be that the entire ball head unit wants to come unscrewed from the tripod due to the way it is attached. The additional, single friction screw that my Z-1 has is not accessible due to the way the center column assembly is designed. Apparently Gitzo revised their attachment design later and RRS has a 3-set screw with a metal ring design, both of which are much better than the old Gitzo design.

I am just having a hard time swallowing another $1k purchase when I am pretty damn happy with the actual legs of the Gitzo. I may be able to sell the Gitzo to someone who likes using a center column though, so that would make the new purchase less painful for sure.

You might have to do that... At least it'll cut into some of the costs for a new/used Gitzo legs... Good luck with whatever you decide...
