My 200th Post, this place is addictive!

Playing with my new B+W CL-PL last night. I'm thinking next time I shouldn't center the horizon. Let me know what I can do to improve.

Thanks,

Dillon

Just as I was taking down the tripod I though I should have tried some vertical shots. Just have to go out tomorrow and try again. Come on up BC is big and beautiful, lots to photograph.

Hi Dillon;

Centre'ing the horizon is not usually a good idea... consider the "Rule of Thirds" and choose whether you want the accent to be on the sky, or the disappearing tracks, and place the horizon at the one-third point either top or bottom accordingly...

In this case I would favour the accent on the tracks with the lines disappearing into infinity...

Just my 2c worth...

Cheers;

Lee

The image has a real nice feel to it as you captured it. Just added a little PP for some contrast.

Dillon, I think your image is great! The tracks lead your eye to the beautiful sky. Well done.

Dillon's image is nice as is, but I like what you did with it, kind of gives it an HDR artistic impression.

Kirk, care to share what you did to bump up the contrast? I really like what you did!

I liked this one as a B&W.

I did two separate edits - one to the lower half of the image (rails/field/background) and one to the upper half (sky). The lower half was underexposed, so I used the "Shadow/highlights" tool in PS to get the shadows unblocked, then a curves move to get some contrast. For the sky, a curves move to get some contrast. I did each edit to a separate duplicated layer and then masked the sky out of the ground layer to let the edited sky show through. Flattened that and added some sharpening.

If you look at the histogram for the original, there are two "humps" - one for the lower half of the image (on the left, or shadow end of the histogram) and one for the sky half (on the right, or highlight end of the histogram). This makes it very easy to construct a separate curve for each of the two elements, in each case, an "s" curve for contrast.

In a way, it is sort of like exposure blending, or quasi-hdr, as each half of the image is getting a different "exposure" and then composited back together.

I love the image and think that the lighting is perfect. I think that the foreground lighting is quite good in that it is able to show darkness while still revealing very good detail ... it does a good job of conveying the time of day and complements the sky. It looks like it has been a while since anybody has made any tracks west on that line.

While the edits are all very good and convey different feelings, the original is still my favorite. One of the indicators of a very good image is when others are eager to post their interpretations

I like the B&W version. I only wish if there was no camera tilt.

Congratulation.
