Well, as the topic states. I've seen the price for Canon's hoods and I'm not prepared to give them $30 for a hood. Wolf Camera sells a generic hood for $5.99 that screws onto where the filter goes. Will this prevent me in using a filter? Any cons. other than that?

Thanks guys!

I always buy the Canon variety - it's expensive, but functionally excellent.

If the hood itself has threads that a filter can screw into or you can screw the filter onto the lens and then attach the hood to the filter, then no. Otherwise it will most definitely prevent you from using a filter.

I've got a hood for my 50mm that mounts on the filter threads and can't stand it. It's a real hassle to get on and off. If your lens is made for a bayonet mount hood, you'll quickly recoup the extra $20-some bucks in time spent shooting rather than messing with screwing the hood into the filter threads.

If the OEM (Canon) hood mounts to an outer "bayonet" connection - especially if the hood mount "thread" is on the body of the lens rather than the moving part of a zoom lens - that is FAR superior to a hood that mounts to the filter threads.

A rigid hood is much better for crash protection than a cheapie folding rubber hood.

Canon's hoods probably do a far better job of blocking stray light sources from hitting the lens than any generic hood would.
