I'm wondering if it's possible to insure a lens I don't own only for the small amount of time it's in my possession. I just inquired at my local camera shop about renting a 100-400 mm lens and asked if their $30 a day price included insurance. To my surprise, they said they didn't offer insurance. Are they crazy? I would think lens renters would strongly encourage their customers to insure.
I have all my gear insured by the same company that handles my car insurance. I've asked if they can insure a lens that I don't own, and unfortuantely they don't offer anything like that. I don't think I'm going to rent the lens from that camer shop because of the lack of insurance. I don't have 2K or 3K or however much that lens is worth in my back pocket should something go wrong. Plus, the event I'm photographing is a political protest, where it's entirely conceivable that damage to equipment could happen.
Whether I rent from this outfit or not, I'd like to know if it's possible to insure gear that you don't own. Occassionally I borrow a lens from another photographer, and it may not be a bad idea to insure that, especially if it's for the type of event I'll be photographing.
