First shots with 40d upgraded from 20d. Looking to capture the emotion. C&C always welcomed...

Not really captured the sharpness yet or stopped the movement.

1/1000 @ f7 should have stopped the motion and given you a sharper image. What setting did you have for the focus? Were you on One Shot, AI Focus or AI Servo? What AF points were you using? All of them or just the center?

You need to get away from the "action program". You are letting the camera make the choices, kind of like a big point and shoot. At this level 1/1000 is not fast enough and no one would use f/7. Learn to use your manual mode or AV and you would see an improvement. Center point focus and AI Servo and open the lens wide.

Thanks for the tips.

Your right I was using the Action Program. It does seem to allow for more FPS. Is this also true?

I went and researched the AF settings. I was shooting One Shot + Action mode. Switched to AIs (Does this only use Center Focus)?

Open the lens wide...2.8?... and what iso In AV mode it wants to shoot at iso 400?

Thanks again.

Cheers... jim

Yep, AV mode for me, f/2.8 - 3.2, AI Servo, center focus point.
Open up your lens. Looks like max aperature is f/5.6. Is that right? Opening the lens will help to soften/blur the background and make your subject stand out.

Here's a sample very similar to yours.
Hope this helps.
Mike

Thanks Mike the above shots were taken w/ a Canon 17-85 in Action Mode.

If I use my 2.8 should I AV that at 2.8?

I like your shot.

The answer to your question is yes.
The above shot was taken with a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 shot through the backstop fence.
SS 1/2000
F/stop f/3.2
ISO 250
AV Mode
AI Servo
Center focus point only.

When I shoot in AV mode, I adjust the ISO as necessary (up or down) so the shutter speed will be fast enough to stop the motion.

AP won't increase your FPS, just set a different drive mode on either AV or Manual.
