Haven't posted for a while, and nothing special in this set, other than the uniforms were replicase of those worn by the Cubs and the Braves in 1948, 60 years ago. This is in commemoration of the 60 year anniversay of local TV station WGN's first broadcast. They did the first couple innings of the boradcast in black and white with the old camera positions. Man, did this drive home how far sports on TV has come since its inception (as if it weren't already obvious).

The Cubs' uni's were all white, and on a bright sunny day, this was a bit of an exposure and AF challenge. The Braves, since they were still in Boston in '48, wore hats the a "B" on them rather than the "A:, which was kinda neat.

All are taken with a MkIIn and an EF 400 f/2.8L IS - EXIF info shown after each shot. Hope you enjoy something a little different.

Here's a shot of Kosuke Fukudome doing what he does best - going "oppo":

Out at second (sure wish I had been in the first base well for this one):

Exposure Time 1/5000 sec

ISO Equivalent 800

The Eamus Catuli sign over the right field wall on Sheffield (let's see if anyone knows what the numbers stand for. If you know, don't give it away...And yes, they were adjusted to how they would have read in 1948 if the sign had existed back then):

Carols Marmol and Kerry Wood showing off their "Inverted W" form that is purported to be the cause of arm and shoulder injuries in some pitchers (http://chrisoleary.com …/DeathToTheInvertedW.html (external link))

Marmol:

Wood:

Braves starter Tim Hudson who pretty much baffled the Cubs:

Exposure Time 1/6400 sec
Aperture f/4
ISO Equivalent 800
Exposure Bias +2/3

And the last one, which is a ho-hum batter shot other than this was a bottom-of-the-ninth homer by Jim Edmonds that tied the game 2-2 (Cubs eventually won 3-2 in 11 on a Walk Off Hit By Pitch - oh yeah, the Cubs still have the best record in MLB - I gotta say that while it's still accurate as it's anyone's guess how long it'll last):
IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/gif'

Exposure Time 1/4000 sec
Aperture f/2.8
ISO Equivalent 640
Exposure Bias +2/3

Thanks for looking,

Dennis:

Great shots. I grew up around Chicago in the late 1960's and have fond memories of attending many Cubbie games with the likes of Banks, Santo, Kessinger, Beckert, et al. I'd love to get back to a game again one of these days, especially with my 2 boys. I'd also love to join you in the photo wells and learn from a master! :)

BTW, if we know the answer on the signs how can we let you know here without giving it away?!

Cheers!

Chris

I love when people do not read the OP:

I know what the sign means!

Excellent as always Dennis. Maybe make a couple of them sepia or b&W for the old timey look. Back in the old days the photogs where right on the field shooting, why didn't you try that? SG could have gone out there and shot.

I have to be in Cincinnati next week for work and I got creds for the dodgers at Reds.

Great series of shots Dennis. The colour is just popping!
Had no idea what the signs mean, but as for most questions, Google has the answer. Pretty cryptic!

Love the Marmol and homer shots the most. That Marmol is pretty awesome, I can feel that pitch almost. Thanx for sharing.

Can I ask why (in bright sunshine) you chose to use ISO 800 in a couple of those shots???

If you don't mind I have a couple questions for you. What determines your settings? You have a few pitching shots, one of them the settings are:
Exposure Time 1/5000 sec
Aperture f/3.5

Another one is:
Exposure Time 1/2500 sec
Aperture f/3.2

And another is:
Exposure Time 1/6400 sec
Aperture f/4

Other than the close up shot of Woods pitching the lighting looks similar. So what determines which ss and aperture you use? Why do you switch from one to the other? I appreciate your help as I am trying to better my baseball shots.

This series of photos is spectacular. As a lifelong cub fan, thank you for bringing up the inevitable injury to Marmol and Wood to finish our magical season.;) Oh well, I will always have these pictures to remind me of the glory days.:D
