Had a Canon tech rep drop into the store...and literally put the lens case down right in front of me. "LENS CASE 800". So the guy looks at me (I've known him for years now) and says..."open up the new toy". Inside was the Canon 800mm f/5.6L lens.

Photographed a few test shots (they're not really worth posting...just random stuff) and the lens handles nice. Makes the 600/4 that they had in the store look small by comparison. Weight wasn't too bad at all, right around 11 pounds. You can barely handhold this with the IS on to get decent pics. Canon actually recommends, at bare minimum, a stout monopod.

A fun toy at nearly 12 thousand dollars.

if what you say is true, all the specs that we have so far were wrong which makes this lens even less attractive to me. the whole premise of this lens was that it was much lighter andd about the same size or even smaller than the 600 F4.

well, i am happy, no need to try to come up with 12k :)

I stand corrected. It's about 10 pounds.

The front diameter is smaller than the 600/4, but the overall length is longer than the 600.

Thats some lens although I don't see where Canon are going with it, is it really worth the extra over a 600mm f4 + 1.4x?
