Hello All,

Was thinking having a thread which has all the rules of Photography like Sunny Rule 16, Rule of third etc. Please contribute in the form of explanation or link.

There really aren't that many rules. There are a lot of compositional guidelines like color, DOF, framing, leading lines, texture and such, but those aren't really rules. Maybe another would be that the minimum shutter speed is 1/focal length.


Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Yikes!! One could write a book but I did pick up a very nice video tutorial that really explains it much better than I can. I believe I got the link from someone hear and bookmarked it. It's 20 minutes long but covers just about everything. It's geared towards videographers but everything applies to SLR users as well.

..which, as stated, applies only to 135 format frame. It needs to be adjusted for smaller APS-C frame, 1/(FL * crop factor), or (1/(FL * 1.6) and for APS-H frame (1/(FL * 1.3), or 1/(FL * 0.6) for 645 format

...which has no rule of thumb. At macro distance DOF is divided about 50:50, but any distance farther away the ratio changes, all the way out to 10:90!
