The short answer is... with great difficulty 
But all this will hopefully improve with the new IS lense.
I set up my light weight travel tripod with 2 legs extended out next to mine, and the third stuck right up hard in my crotch - basically so that I was partially sitting against it. This made it quite a steady platform. I then had to try and time the shots so that the subject was at the completion of their movement ie. when they stopped moving one way there was a brief pause before they started moving back the other way.
Ontop of that, I took about 700mb of photos in an hour and a bit, with ALOT of rejects. Plus there were numerous deletions on the night.
