My experience is that you are most likely to get paid by either a publication or the event organiser, but its been pretty rare that either have been willing to pay.

Punters might buy a print every now and again, but mostly not.

I have personally not found club photography that directly lucrative. I have met a number of clients by shooting club nights though.

Corporate events however are much better. A portfolio of really nice club photos can assist you in picking up the corporate gigs though so its not totally wasted effort.

Publication = Magazine/Newspaper/Website

Punter = People out at the event.

I started with a Canon G3 and a 420EX flash. Gear does not necessarily make the photographer, but is does help.

A digital SLR, a short zoom lens (eg 17-50mm f/2.8) and a flash (430EX?) will be more than enough to get you going and shouldn't be too expensive a set up.

You'd have to keep a watch on Classifieds: Sell, or maybe put an ad in the "Buy" section, but the price would probably be higher. ;)

You could use that set-up yes. As stated above an external flash would be very desirable also.
