I just got a Canon SD750 digital camera and am very pleased, first of all, with the quality of the pics and video as well. The video is shot as an AVI at up to 640x480 resolution @ 15 or 30fps. Now I'm wondering if there is some program that can successfully convert a VOD (DVD files) or even a regular AVI or MPEG file to that format and also some way of allowing the camera to recognize it when it's pulled up from the memory card. I believe the THM files that go with each video file carry data that tells the camera info about the vid and the preview still shot used to show what vid it is. I've tried ImTOO MPEG Encoder, but for some reason the bitrate keeps going negative and the output file won't even play in WMP. Everything but the video bitrate matches a vid I recorded & downloaded from the camera . Help me out here because I believe it's possible and practical to do, considering it has a nice crisp 3" screen and can use SDHC cards, and the cam is super-portable. Only other potential issue that might kill this idea is the audio output.. or will it? Does it work with headphones? Any geniuses out there wanna take a stab at this? I'm working on it... but if you have any answers that could help.

try the free prrogram called "handbrake" official site ---> http://handbrake.fr/ (external link)

does your camera have a speaker to hear the videos, i have the sd1000 and i am not sure it has a speaker

handbrake is what you use to convert vob files to all sorts of other files, its what people use to convert movies from vob to play on there ipods and psp's

( camera: powershot sd1000 )

To answer your question, yes, it does have a speaker but that wouldn't be the ideal listening method for a portable video device. It does have AV output but the jack outputs video and audio thru the same jack and headphones won't work by just plugging them into the jack. I tried, doesn't work...yet.

As far as converting video, I found an old-ish thread that sort of outlines what I'm trying to do. Ultimately, I would like to be able to take a DVD and convert it to be able to watch and listen to the entire movie on the LCD of the camera (if possible), or perhaps a short TV show (typically 22 minutes) if the battery life is a problem for watching full length movies.

This guy I think was editing video he already shot on the cam and wanted to put the edited version back onto it, which essentially is a different/new video. If that is possible, than with all the conversion tools out there, I still think the concept can work. I'm going to try his instructions (courtesy of "the Russian") and see what I can do with it, but its seems like a great start.

Here's the link if anyone else wants to take a crack at it... and please, post result and your own details of the process...

interesting - I took a quick stab at it.
I didn't use virtualdub but a another conversion program (M2convertpro) which had the mjpeg V3 codec. The problem I encountered was the Russian program "avi3canon" apparently doesn't work with vista, I couldn't get it to do anything and consequently my converted files did not work with my Canon S5.
it would be a nice feature if you could play a movie with the output to a TV

Hmm... this may not be practical after all... for me at least. In asking some questions and testing the cam out, it seems the camera can only record for a max of 30 minutes, then stops... which, thus far, i'm not sure if that applies to all settings but it would seem just about right considering i've read that it records up to a max of 4GB (at 640x480 @ 30fps, my 1GB card shows about 8 minutes recording time... 4 x 1GB = 4GB/~~32 minutes)

Also, I do not see any navigational controls for the video player anyway (FF, REW), and that might get annoying when u need to Fast Forward 40 minutes into a movie u didn't finish watching or rewind to see or hear something u missed or need to replay for someone.

The timing also poses a problem with the instructions as described above, because it suggests you record a video the same length as the new AVI you're trying to create. Most movies i would wanna watch are more than 30 mins anyway.

Considering there are still some TV shows i might wanna make portable, when i have time and when I get a 4GB card to play with, I'll give it a shot. Till then, i guess it'll just haff to be a nice camera only :( ... wait :)

Haaaa ya got me eh? I actually use my Palm pilot for vids & stuff but right now itz broken and I've gone thru like 3 or 4 because the screen keeps cracking SOMEHOW while still in the protective case. My phone plays vids also but the screen is small as hell. Clear as a bell, just tiny. I like versatility and alternatives too, and seek to get the most out of all my lil gadgets, very often successfully. My phone thatz almost 3 yrs old still outdoes many phones that people around me have simply cuz I explored itz capacities. I saw potential in this, so i explored  .
