Hi Guys
Anyone know of a cheap mounting/tripod ring for the 100mm f2.8 macro lens please. I understand there are some inexpensive alternatives to the Canon one.
Regards

But if you feel you need to pursue it, you are right to look for a third party instead of the Canon. My understanding is that the plastic adapter in the Canon unit makes it a disaster.

I use it anytime I do tripod work with the 100 macro. [Gear List | Flickr

As noted you don't need the tripod ring with the 100mm if you use an L-Plate but it can be convenient when shooting flowers. Hi Lester Ray-P

The best ones are designed for individual camera models.

On a different tack - I was considering a level plate like a theodolite tribrack base with levels on it. The tripod adaptors often come with a bubble 2-D level included. One of my Kirk ones does. And also I was looking for an L plate at RSS the other day and they don't list one for the 5D! No you don't really need the tripod ring for portrait if you have an L-plate, not in terms of keeping the mount screw from undoing, as they tend to if you just flop the ball head over without a plate. Unless you just think it is cool, or like the way the tripod mount looks, save your money and buy something that you really need.

I know I am old and weak but when I have the lens on a 400D with a battery grip, a flash bracket and a 580EX flash and a couple of tubes I can't hold it steady so I need a tripod.Without the ring its a lot of weight on the mounting screw hole on the camera body Chris
