Look here (external link)

In South Africa and Botswana I have only seen large plugs with fat round pins. That item looks like the pins are too small for the fat round holes but hard to tell the scale. I would advise a 2 socket US extention lead and then buy a plug locally and wire it. Your local Pick and pay supermarket in SA will have them. Worth checking out anyway to see what the locals buy. This will allow a more secure socket fitment and allow you to maiximise the charging and usage when you have access to power. Extension leads can be super light and need very little wire ... a foot or so is plenty.

thanx for the link. i'll make pictures of what i need and go to REI this week.

i have a US adapter that cost me 2 bucks and is very light and will allow me to plug in three devices .... but i need to have the correct adapters for the different countries.

we're the last of the 21 guests to arrive in JB and we'll be flown straight away to mala mala so i don't think we'll have time to buy anything....at least that's the assumption we are following.

thanx Wilt -- we are in SA only for the first two days. so access to power won't even be necessary.

this is a pretty high-end affair organized by national geographic and everyone on the safari is from the u.s.

now i would think that u.s. adapter plugs would be provided in the various camps ... but i won't rely on it.

it looks like to me that the ac 301 and ac 304 are the ones i need which i think are the same as WA-7 and WA-10 from the other site.

i'll bet that belkin universal plug will work but i think i'l write down all these numbers and check out REI first :D.
