Interesting New York Times story... This could affect all of us at POTN.

All three companies say that placing caps on broadband use will ensure fair access for all users.

Money money money. What is the point in high speed broadband when after you stream a couple of movies & download a few albums off iTunes etc you're expected to fork out even more for your already expensive connection.

These companies won't be happy until the net is owned by them and they control everything we see/hear & interact with online.

Gonna affect the movie and you-tube downloaders more than picture sites. A 150k picture is nothing compared to a movie.

I'm in the US and I think a lot of people here are pampered with unmetered internet access. I'm originally from Asia and most internet plans are still metered.

Welcome to the rest of the world. Australia has had plans since day 1 and most people would freak out if they knew you guys were getting an "all you can download" kind of deal over there! You have had it soooooo good!

We're capped - sucks too! Our only choice was to go with satellite (it was that or dial-up). In a 7 day period if we go past 5 gig, they throttle us down until that 7 day period is done and we start over again. So uploading photos, downloading tunes, etc can get bogged down. If I know I'm going to be downloading a lot, I use my Sprint broadband card so it doesn't count against the home access.

we are limited to 60Gigs per month. For me its nothing but for someone uploading or downloading 4gig movies all day and night i could see it sucking.

Are you kidding? My photos for upload average 1 MB each and a typical session may contain 200 or more photos. Comcast glitches my uploads after 5 MB and I have to restart at a slower speed. I hate it that Comcast groups me in with the illegal file sharers.

It's not all illegal filesharing. Just look at the bandwidth the BBC iPlayer takes up or streaming shows from ABC, HBO etc. The girlfriend has over 3.5GB sitting in her BBC iPlayer & 4OD managers just now and that was just a few shows she wanted to catch up on from the last couple of days.

Sure we aren't forced into downloading but it just seems like any small piece of internet freedom we thought we had is getting taken away at an alarming rate.

Makes me glad I dumped AT&T DSL, skipped Comcrap and went for WOW cable service instead, no mention of them in that article. :D

I'm still with Comcast

I'm sure the major ISPs have more than enough money to upgrade their infrastructure when necessary. If "most people aren't expected to exceed the caps", then why even introduce them in the first place?

Because there are a few people that hog the whole pipe from everyone else. Back in the day we called them bogarts, they’d come to the party, eat all the food, drink all the beer, smoke all the … um salmon and leave little for others.

Personally I like the throughput throttles better than the bit caps. If I want to download 10 movies in the middle of the day when everyone is trying to do stuff and the pipe is already full, then cap my throughput and slow me way down. If I want to download the same movies at 3 in the morning when nothing is going and the pipe is mostly empty anyway, then give me the bandwidth.

I actually believe that our local Comcast is doing something similar already. If I run a internet speed test right after the kids get out of school say between the hours of 3 and 9, I get about 5 mbps. If I run the speed test at noon or at midnight I’m getting 17~24 mbps
