This question came up several weeks ago and I promised to look into it once I received my Elinchrom 8-1/4" reflector (listening Rudi?).

So, we're talking about the inexpensive ($34.95 at B&H) barndoors made by Interfit for use on their EXD200 and EX150 flash units:

Apart from the barndoors themselves, the set comes with 4 colored gel filters in plastic frames and a metal honeycomb grid. Here we see the barndoors with grid in place:

The frame of the assembly is plastic and the leaves are metal.

So, will these barndoors fit the Elinchrom reflector? Let's see:

IMAGE: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3160/2580985451_c66f8835e5_o.jpg

Zounds! I guess they do! Here are two additional views:

Now for the caveats: While the barndoors clearly will work with the Elinchrom reflector, note that the fit is quite snug. The barndoor frame is held to the reflector by two molded plastic hooks on one side and two metal clips on the other. Once the assembly is mounted, it will not rotate on the reflector so mind your orientation when putting the barndoors on. I've already found that it's *much* easier to mount the barndoors with the reflector off the flash. I've made two small marks on the rim of the reflector (with a Sanford Sharpie) to ensure proper alignment of the assembly when the reflector/barndoor combination is mounted on the light. I may fiddle with one or both of the metal clips to try to loosen the fit a bit and thus ease the mounting/dismounting process.

Obviously, I can't speak to long term durability. For heavy duty pro use, there are better (and much costlier) solutions available. However, bearing in mind the reasonable $35 these things cost and the value added grid and filters that are included, I think the Interfit set represents darn good value.

Looks good Dave. Some of this third party compatibility is about fidgeting, filing, and bending to get things to fit and work but I agree that it's worth it.

The mod I used to do on the Lowel doors took a bit of work and either cutting or filing so this looks like a breeze compared to that.

I'm still curious about whether the Lowel doors will fit the 7" Elinchrom reflector.

As am I. However, it was an absolute madhouse at B&H today and I was already pushing my luck with the number of items on my list. In any case, I knew I wasn't prepared to spend the $63 the Lowel bardoors cost so it wouldn't have been totally ethical to take up any more of Daniel's time just to satisfy my curiosity. We'll save that for a weekday when the pro lighting department is a bit of a ghost town.

Hey Dave,

What is the grid provided? 40 degrees? does it specify?

There are no markings on it whatsoever, Robert. However, it looks an awful lot like the Speedotron 40 degree so that would be my best guess.

Thank you very much for this post. I have placed my order with B&H and will not wait until my tracking info says, "Out For Delivery," (how I love to see that on UPS tracking).

Yay! Doing the happy dance... :D

This was I can get the barndoors and 8.25" reflector/grid set for only a few bucks more than just the barndoors and reflector combo from Elinchrom!

I should have mentioned in my original post that the Interfit barndoors will mount on the standard Genesis reflector as well. The Elinchrom 8.25" reflector is not required.

We still haven't found out if texturizing the interior of the Genesis reflector helps or improves the light. If it does then that may present some other options.

Anyone up for taking some steel wool to the Genesis reflector? It can't hurt it at all and can only help so I think it would be advantageous for at least one person with the kit to do the 'mod'.

So how are those barndoors holding up? Looks like B&H and Adorama are both out of stock.

Well, Jason (aka Slivr) managed to partially melt his and served up a warning about extended use of the modeling light.

I've used mine rarely and cautiously and have experienced no problems.

That said, it now appears that the INT207 would be the better choice than the INT210. The 207 is intended for use on continuous lights and is made of metal, not plastic like the 210.
