I bought my WFT-E5 at the same time as my camera solely to be able to Live View control / EOS Utility my new 7D for taking wildlife photos at some distance from the camera without using a wire. And I’m grateful for this thread.

So far all I’ve been able to do is b***** up my connection between my home network and my MacBook Pro - now thankfully restored. But I have hopes that with the instruction at the beginning of this thread, I will be able to [PTP?] between the two. Otherwise I will have wasted my money on the WFT-E5!

So far the 7D WFT-E5 seems to want to connect up with my local router. Not what I want.

Hopefully it is possible to set things up so I can duly switch easily between the local network and taking the Mac out with the Canon without jumping through all those hoops more than the once.

Certainly the minimal instruction that comes with the WFT-E5 is pretty useless and Canon UK support didn’t even know what battery the unit took - if any - and suggested it was powered by the camera. [In fact it uses it’s own (not supplied) LP-E6 like the 7D.]

Again, many thanks for the instructions.

I am appalled this is still so complex! God knows if people ever manage to do this from their iPhones as touted by Canon in their promotional videos.

Alright! Haven't done any extensive testing but PTP modes seems to be working fine now. It's about time.

Thanks for the heads-up. :)

I got my WFT-E2A a few months ago when we were going to be in an area of the world where getting memory cards was not all that easy. I purchased the WFT and bought 4 - 640 GB Seagate External Drives for storage space.
I found your post to be of great help to easily configure the device and get up and running quickly. Now it is not a problem and this was one of the best add ons I have have purchased for field work and one which I find using everywhere now.
Thanks for taking the time to post this for the members.

I had managed to set my system up and everything was working until yesterday!
I am using a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and set it up to use the EOS method of connection (the new PTP). I followed your instructions and manually assigned an iP4 address which works great until I want to use Airport to connect to the internet, I then need to go back into sys prefs/network/my home network/advanced etc and reassign it to use DHCP rather than the manual address for the Canon wireless network and vice versa to go back to the Canon system. What have I done wrong?

The ad hoc connection is great if you want the WFT to communicate directly with the computer out in the field or on location. However, if you want to use the WFT in a studio environment or on location where there is already a network in place, then it's more convenient to use the Infrastructure connection method. On the computer, the IP can still be assigned manually or with "DHCP Manual", as long as the IP selected is within the IP range of the network. And on the WTF, select Infrastructure connection method instead of Ad hoc. The rest of the set up should essentially be the same.

This is easy to set-up but the functionality is not as good as eos utility with the camera connected to a wireless network
