The F-18 Hornet was making a very fast but subsonic pass. Water condenses out of the air to make the effect. You also see it on wing tips during hard maneuvers. Here are a few more pics:

Nice captures you got the cone devoloping nicely on #1, they all seem a little soft except for the T-6's.

A little L goes a long way.

I noticed that, too. Are you using USM for sharpening? If so, try 100 0.8 1 & see how that works.
Nice shots though.

And, for prop planes, 1/500 is too fast: Airshow guys - prop freeze?

Yeah, a lot of my shots that day didn't turn out as sharp as I would have liked. Do you think it is focus or shake. I was using the 70-300mm with IS on, usually at max zoom so a little unsteadiness may be the culprit.

Are you using USM for sharpening

No, but thanks for the tip; I'll try it. I'm new to DSLR and I appreciate any help. Learning all the variables is a little intimidating.
I would have liked more blur on the props also. Had ISO at 100 and was shooting in Program mode. Should have been in Tv or manual.

The A-10 is sharper at the back than at the front. I'd guess the pan speed didn't match the A-10 speed. There's an example of that here:
