ok, i have been searching for a new dslr camera for a while now, and this will be my first dslr

my question is what do you think the best camera is for me, my price range will probably just go over 1000, nothing over 1500
i also forgot to mention that i would like to shoot sports too, like paintball, soccer, other things also

i see these deals on ebay that come with 2 lenses and all this other stuff, but im still not sure on what camera to get, or exactly the best place to get it
and im really looking for a package with 2 lenses too
i have been looking into the nikon d60 too if that helps but since this is a canon forum i have an idea of what to expect from that haha

Those ebay deals are no good. The lens are usually very cheap and those bundle packages are really a ripoff. I don't know if getting a 40D would be best for you, being that you're a beginner, but I think you should take advantage of the $200 rebate is offering for it before July 19th.

I believe the body alone of the 40D is just under 1000$. One of the 40D bundles are about 1200$ and it seems to be a pretty good walk-around lens with a standard to telephoto zoom.

If you want to get a more consumer DSLR, you could look into the the XSi that was just released though the 40D is superior to it for not much more. I believe the kit lens bundle is 900$

My honest opinion would be to get the 1200$ 40D bundle and take advantage of that rebate!!!

Check it out www.bhphotovideo.com (external link)
They're a reputable seller.

Hope this helps.

Brian

Well, I'd also recommend the 40D. You could also consider the Nikon D80, but it's outdated now, with inferior noise and AF performance to the 40D imho. The pentax K20D is probably worth a look as well, although by all accounts the AF on this camera isn't exactly a speedster! 40D is your best value for money/performance imho.

Amazon has the same price as BH but w/ free shipping and amazing customer service. I order almost all of my camera stuff through amazon.

Though the 40D is a great body, it’s going to consume nearly all your budget. To start with I would go with the XTi as a body, the 18-55IS and the 55.250IS lens. You should be able to get all three for under $1000. I believe I saw them as a kit at Costco this weekend for something like $995.

I reckon skip the xxxD series and go straight to the 40D. The 400D is not bad, but once you go up the chain they seem like toys.

You've had a lot of recommendations for expensive and very, very good Canon DSLR's. The cameras recommended are either pro or semi-pro bodies. Do you need that kind of camera?

However, a few questions are in order 1st.

Have you been using a point and shoot camera? If so, which one?

Why do you want a DSLR? What do you usually take pictures of?

Do you like the "look" of pictures from your point and shoot? Color etc?

Once you answer these questions, I think you'll get better recommendations.

I have an XTi and love it. I think it's a much better camera for me than a Nikon D60. They are in the same price range. Here are some pictures of the Iowa flood in Des Moines I snapped over the weekend that will give you an idea what the XTi with the 18-55 IS "kit" lens pictures look like. All are snapshots rather than creative works of art. :-)

If the 40D would have been this price when I bought my XTi last November, I would have skipped over the XTi in a heart beat. It is a personal preference. I suggest going to Best Buy or a camera store and try them out and see what you like better. The 40D is an awesome camera for the price.

I just went through the same experience and ended up getting the 40D. It is a lot of camera at first but you will grow into it. Now when I see the XTi/XSi I'm happy with my choice.

There are a few really good books on the 40D to be had as well which will help you out tremendously.

Because there is an excellent rebate on the 40D right now, I recommend going with that one. If there was no rebate, I'd go with the XTi.

Even though there is a great deal out there on the 40D, it is still double the price of an XTi and will consume the entire 1k budget. Also, the difference between the two cameras is not that great especially in image quality. For someone just starting I would get the cheapest body I could and pour the remaining dollars into better glass. A 40D with a kit lens is not necessarily a better setup than a XTi with much better glass especially if your willing to go to the $1500. A Xti with the 17-55IS will out perform a 40D with kit glass.

DON'T BUY a camera from ebay..period. it's like playing russian roulette, and for every good seller there are a zillion BAD sellers, and not only that, a reputable seller won't be offering a price that is significantly cheaper ( if it is cheaper...usually it isn't) than a reputable seller.

for shooting sports, etc, yes you need a decent camera, but more importantly, you will need' fast' lenses, nothing slower than a2.8, ideally a 1.8 or faster....unfortunatly, this will take you well over your budget...the elnses alone could cost well over $1,500 depending on what you buys.

my advice would be to invest in a rebel xsi with a kit lens and take it from there...

but seriously...avoid ebay for 'expensive' purchases.
