I chose Canon because the Digital Rebel XT was on sale when I bought it. Yeah, true story. I'm one of those "photographer over gear" people so you'll never find me being too gung-ho anything.

+1

but I stayed with canon for high iso performance and the lenses.

My father used an Eos 3 so he had canon lenses. Not having to buy lot of extra lenses, I stayed with Canon when I started.

I was talking with a Nikon user at the weekend. For him, the choice was made with ergonomics. He was happer using the Nikon than the Canon. Sometimes that's important to people.

For me, I went with image quality alone.

mmm, well, all those years ago (circa 89)...I had some spare cash, always wanted a good camera, went and visited a camera store and had a play with both the Canon and Nikon offerings at the time. It was really no contest - the eos630 was a better performer than anything Nikon had @ the time imho. Back then, Canon AF ruled on both speed and accuracy, and by a long mile. Nikon had slightly better metering and flash metering, but it was close. Other than that, most of the models were pretty evenly matched, maybe with the Canon being a fraction cheaper than the Nikon equivalent. It did help I guess that the sales person was PRO Canon. I look back at it now and realise how biased he was lol, and it did rub off onto my purchasing decision I believe.

I didn't invest much into Canon until 99, when I got the 1n and a bunch of L series lenses. Been using Canon since.

I personally don't like the Nikon UI, and the Canon does feel better to my hands imho. That said, for a good number of years Nikon has been the equal of Canon imho. Sure, some will say that Canon has been better at high ISO noise (and it has), but high ISO noise is not the be all and end all of photography for MOST users. Sure, some shoot at only high ISOs, but MOST people don't. Trying to get that rationale around some of the rabid Canon fans here was mission impossible.

Recent events have had me leaning strongly to Nikon - mainly cos the D3 is a better camera than anything Canon has at the moment, and the fact that Canon lied about the Mark III AF issues to consumers. Sure, some people are so biased here that they'll blindly deny that Canon ever knowingly lied, and I'll leave them to their naive daydreams.

I'm hoping Canon comes back swinging at Nikon with a nice new 1 series camera that equals or betters the D3. I'm hooked into the Canon accessories now, so it doesn't make financial sense for me to change to Nikon, plus it's early days, I really do expect Canon to come swinging back into the fray of the action vs Nikon.

I've had a good near 20 years with Canon, I love my Mark IIn to bits, even though I crave D3 performance (no more flash for macro shots, just shoot high ISO that is clean!).

edit: Plus Canon is the only lens manufacturer with a fantastic lens like the MPE-65. Canon also bundles free RAW processing software with their gear (DPP), which is nice of them.

My very first point and shoot was a Canon. So was the 2nd. Then I bought the GL2 video camera, also Canon. I've just never been disapointed, so i saw no reason to change. When I finally found a friend who used a Nikon DSLR, I gave it a go, and it reinforced my previous decisions.

You hang around the wrong places IRL. I was at a small local air show yesterday and all the serious photographers there were using Canon. The people who were impressed by other people's gear were all wielding Noinks. No big fast primes, but a bunch of 70-200s and 100-400s along with 24-70s.

20 years ago I was a die hard Nikon user. I mean big time. If it didn't say Nikon, I didn't even look at it. I worked at a camera store for a while and got to try out all cameras. And talk to users. Well I got a photo job shooting racing. But right before that I got ripped off of over $6000.00 of camera equipment. So I had a point and shoot. Thinking about it, at that time Canon was far above Nikon in autofocus. And to me it seemed like Nikon was always 2 steps behind Canon. And my Dad always swore by Canon. So I went and got a couple of A2's. 70-200 2.8, ect.... When I wanted to go digital, just a couple of months ago, I thought about Nikon. But thought I have lenses for Canon. Not the greatest, but lenses. And I thought Nikon was still behind Canon. So that is the route I went. I have not held a Nikon, except my manual EM, in about 13 years. I am afraid if I do I will switch and loose a lot of money in the process.

My film camera was Olympus. I had a Sony digital P&S.

I took a digital photography course at a local school. The instructor had a 20D. It seemed like a good idea to have the same camera back then.

Like Jason puts it, it's like Ford vs. Chevy, you get used to one and stick with it.

With digital photography it is all about the 0's and the 1's. Canon has better 0's and Nikon has better 1's. I like low-light photography so I lean toward the 0's and thus went with Canon. :)

I don't know why Nikon is so popular. My Stepfather and other family members have been using Nikon for decades. And I've dealt with two companies who use Nikon as well. I would've thought for portrait work, Canon would be more common/popular. When I had my D80, I fought with more noise than ever with Canon. I'm not sure I understand the mindset of Nikon owners, but perhaps if that's what they started with, they don't want to switch around. If they are happy with it, why should they?

When Minolta got out of the camera business, I was looking for a new brand. The Nikons just didn't feel great in my hand and just felt cheap. I held a 20D and was sold.

I've noticed that Nikon is much more aggressive with advertising and whatnot. I think they also push for "agreements" with retailers -- I've seen a lot of stores that prominently feature Nikons, with a couple of Canons way down the page.

Myself, I read up a lot before buying Canon, and I liked the qualities that Canon cameras offer.
