Since I started taking photography seriously I feel like I've never met anyone
(in real life) who was as "geeked-out" over Canon as I am. Why is Nikon so popular?

Tell me why you choose Canon over Nikon, and why you stay strong as a fan of Canon.

I usually get geek out over images not gear.

Ive always enjoyed taking pictures and it compliments graphic design work really well and I've just let it grow and grow.

I've always felt a connection with a Canon in terms of the bodies, lenses and simplicity in terms of operations. Its a camera I can use unless like Nikon where it felt like I HAD to practice and learn. It felt forceful, un natural whereas Canon just felt like it was made for me. :)

Nothing hurts more than knowing that your hometown team (Lets go Mets!) endorses the darkside (Nikon) while you shoot Canon.

I've noticed that Nikon is much more aggressive with advertising and whatnot. I think they also push for "agreements" with retailers -- I've seen a lot of stores that prominently feature Nikons, with a couple of Canons way down the page.

Myself, I read up a lot before buying Canon, and I liked the qualities that Canon cameras offer.

15 years ago I worked at a camera store. I worked there for just a little over a year. I saw the Nikon rep at least every other month. I do not recal ever seeing the canon rep. And Nikon often had special "sales" for employees. I really liked the Nikon rep. he was a good guy. Only other rep that was decent was the Sigma rep.

I got my AE-1 because it seemed that it was an easy camera to learn about photography with and back then Nikon had the reputation of being for Pros ( you had to go to a camera store to see a Nikon while the discount department stores carried Canon). The AE-1 now seems like a toy in myhands compared to my 40D

the cold hard facts - better noise-control (since eclipsed by Nikon's D3), a lens lineup which meet my needs, preferred handling & excellent after-sales service. what which seem trivial - does anybody, like me, disklike Nikon's flimsy & tacky looking thumb wheel at the camera's rear? their camera bodies are also more chunky/blocky and warped-wierd..... and my wife hates the red V at the front grip :p but she has no comments on the red ring on the L lenses...

I bought a Canon Elan IIE over a Nikon many years due to the simple fact that I looked at the Canon and understood all the dials and how they worked. The Nikon just looked confusing. It looks like nothing has changed, I picked up a friends D300 and it took me around 5 minutes to figure out how to change the shooting mode. So for me the ease of use was a big factor.

Maybe the yellow "Nikon" on the neckstraps just stands out more? That's the first thing I notice about people with Nikons. I don't know why they are so popular, but many that I see are just D40s anyways.

I chose Canon for price+performance, good ISO performance. My wedding photographers used 20D/30D/40D and I was blown away by how awsome the pics were and while that's mainly the glass and talent, the bodies have some to do with it and they don't cost a fortune.

As far as knowing people in "real life" that are into photography.. check out my thread HERE which I wrote about similar problem...
