Does anyone have any practical experience of using the Manfrotto MN393 long lens bracket?

To me it sometimes seems a bit awkward to get it adjusted properly. I seem to need one hand to hold the monopod upright, one hand to loosen/tighten the adjustment screw, one hand to slide the lens backward and forward to get the balance right....

Perhaps it will come with practice. Or is there a simple trick I'm missing?
