yesterday when i was preparing to take some pictures of my new pc, i saw something in my viewfinder. it was some kind of a dot. maybe some dust got there. but how could it get there if i hadn't changed my lens for more than a month? the "dot" isn't seen on any pictures. so my guess is that it's either IN the viewfinder or somewhere inside the camera. how do i get it out? tried using a rocket blower - didn't help.

You don't get it out... these viewfinders seem to be extremely tough to clean, I've not seen anyone in the forum say they were successful in cleaning out determined debris with just a blower. I've had a small hair in mine since the day it came out of the box (and of course more smaller dust keeps accumulating). Eventually Canon will have to take apart the viewfinder to clean it out... or do it yourself?

There was a thread last week that linked to someone taking apart the assembly and it did not look like something I'd want to do... but if you're brave....

Actually the 40D is pretty easy to clean. Odds are that the speck is on the focus screen and using the blower might dislodge it if it is on the body side of the screen. If it is on the pentaprism side, the focus screen is designed to be easily removed. Just pop open the focus screen holder, carefully grip the focus screen with a pair of tweezers and pick it right up. Once out you can give it a few puffs with the blower and re-install it.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

My gunk is not on the focusing screen, personally. I've removed it and blown up above it, etc, and no luck. Good tip though as it should be the first thing you do.

My 1st 40D had a spot in teh view finder. I took back to where I bought it and had them exchange it for me. I told them if they could get the dot out that i would keep it... if not I wanted a new one. They could not so they swapped it out for me.
