Hi all,

I'm going to shooting ALOT for the next few weekends, we are talking in the upwards of thousands of pictures of hockey and basketball. And I only have two batteries!

Where can I get GOOD RELIABLE batteries without spending 100+ dollars on the BHPhoto NP-E3's?

Unless you cannot get access to electricity to charge at least once every two days, two batteries will do you just fine. I have shot motorsports ALL DAY on one battery and not even come close to running it dry. That's upwards of 2,000-plus shots a day.

Interesting .. mine went 1,400 on one battery yesterday, but that was with plenty of focus tracking on a 300 2.8.

I also use the 300 2.8 IS. Be sure your batteries are conditioned too for max charge.

i have a blackdiamond battery i got for $20..and its 2200mha instead of 1600 so it holds a little longer. either way I find that these batteries even the canon one doesnt last all that long and they die fast if they are left sitting around in the bag

Apart from my two lithium ion batteries, I always carry at least two spare sets of AA's, one set pre-loaded into the cassette. The ability to throw in a set of AA's is the main reason I use a grip. AA's can be bought in little, out of the way villages in the back of beyond, BP-511A's cannot.

As you can tell, I've been caught without a spare charged battery once too often.

The 2000 shots on one battery is amazing. When I was testing my 30D after buying it, I only had the one battery and went from fully charged to nothing in about 50! That was using AI Servo and focusing/metering a lot but taking few actual shots.

Yep...I bought a pair of them last month for $19.99/ea. Having to return 1 of them, as it was DOA. The other one lasts just as long as my Canon OEM batter does, if not longer.

I did notice while shooting with the 300mm f/2.8L IS over the weekend chasing egrets that the battery went a little quicker than usual (with heavy focus tracking) but still - a good battery freshly charged should do close to 1,500-2,000 shots with occasional chimping. I usually only carry a single spare, leaving the charger at home/hotel.

I decided to bite the bullet and go with real Canon NP-E3 batteries. I don't trust third-party batteries to provide the weathersealing that I rely on.
