Hey guys, Just wondering... When the replacement for the current 5D comes out, how much do you think the price will drop for current 5D? Anyone knows when that replacement will be coming?

I just got a 5D, but think that maybe I would sell it and wait for the price to drop... I don't really need it.. Just Want It! But my 30D is enough for me for now! :D

Whenever it comes, the price for the current 5D will probably hardly budge. Consider that you can get a 5D body now for about $1800 compared to $3300 when it was introduced. That's a huge markdown and I expect stocks to sell out before retailers make any further discounts. Canon's usually pretty good at managing inventory.

Most likely in September, but that's just a WAG. No one really knows.

May I sound authoritative? :)

It will be in September and will be a 40D with a FF sensor. This means that the AF is slightly improved but still not their best AF that they know how to make. Also it will only be 3fps.

My hope is that it includes two CF card slots for RAID purposes.

I personally don't think it'll drop much more than it is at currently.

They will only wait until photokina to present it if the camera isn't
finished before. Competetion with Nikon and Sony is tight and nobody
can affort to not take the buzz as the first one who anounces a new
sexy fullframe camera.

When is the new 5D coming?

Some people will tell you that it will be at Photokina in september (which is possible), some will tell you that it is urgently needed to beat Nikon and is just around the corner (also possible, but unlikely before Photokina, imo).

The reality is that people have been saying it is "just around the corner" for at least two years now, putting people off buying the current one as they will be better off if they wait.

There will be a replacement at some point (probably) but it still has no direct competitor at it's current price point. It still produces fantastic quality images and is also still selling strongly. So (despite what some will say) it isn't the creaking, aging monolith that is limping along in need of urgent replacement.

Until an official announcement is made by Canon themselves, any replacement date that people put forward is mere speculation and is no more valid than any guess you might make yourself.

My guess would be september at earliest (Photokina), probably 2009 though with PMA in march being a good candidate. This guess has no more validity than anybody elses though.

Price drop for original 5D?

Very little, if anything. The 1D/Ds IIs didn't plummet with the release of the 1D/Ds IIIs, the 30D hardly dropped when the 40D came out.

You have to remember that the 5D has already dropped in price dramatically. It's replacement will be at a higher price point and so there won't be a big need to drop the 5D further in order to clear old stock. There are still a lot of people who want the current 5D, many no doubt still saving for it, announcement of a new model may push many of these to get their orders in, before the old one sells out.

If you want one, waiting is only meaning that you are missing out on shooting with one of the greatest cameras Canon have produced. I know one guy who is constantly saying that he is going to get a 5D, he has been saying this since he tried mine 18 months ago. However, he keeps putting it off because he keeps being told that he should wait "as the new one is due out". He now really wishes that he had bought one 18 months ago, but still waits because it is now "so old" that the new one "must" now be just around the corner.

It looks like the XXXD and the XXD as well as the 1D non S cameras or all the croppers are on a 18 month replacement cycle. All the S cameras are on a 36 month replacement cycle. As there has not been a 5D replacement one can guess that as it is a FF camera as well it will conform to the 36 month cycle which puts the replacement due this September. Sept will be 36 months.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

basically you got a 5d just for the sheer heck of it...lol

as for price drops, imagine they will go fo peanuts on ebay when 1000's like you all of a sudden decide that waiting for the 5d mkII wasn't such a bad idea after all after canon launch it.
