So I've got a 380 EX. Nothing fancy.

I'm looking for a diffuser to purchase. All I need it to do is give me soft shadows. I don't do anything professionally, but I do take photos of family and do a lot of macro.

Should I be getting a softbox, or something else? Could anyone offer me some suggestions? Again, nothing major. I tried making my own, but I'm not very handy and it didn't quite work... :P

I hope you mean 580EX.

Look at this link:

Check the accessories of this flash, you will see 2 umbrellas from Impact to use with this flash, if you don't like those umbrellas then just simply click on the umbrellas, and above you can see the link for main category or sub categories of the diffuser, just go one step back and you will see many diffusers that you can use most of them with your flash.

no no, i really do mean a 380EX. I'm not looking for power or professional quality here, just something I can attach to the flash to take away the harsh shadows.

A piece of white cardboard and a rubber band, attach to back of flash to throw a bit of light forwards, and bounce the majority of the light off the ceiling.
