Hi guys,
I have had a Canon A520 for a long time and I absolutely love it. Going by my experience with the A520, I decided to upgrade to an A570IS, on which I got a really good deal on ebay. I got my 520 off ebay too and it served me really well. It seems that the 570 may be defective. It works perfectly fine indoors and under not so bright conditions, but when taking pictures outdoors the shutter closes up. When I point to a backlit source (or outdoors on a sunny day), the shutter can be heard readjusting until it closes up and the screen goes blank. The shutter opens back up if I hit the disp button 3 times or if I turn it off and turn it on again. I pointed the camera to a bright light and observed the shutter as it shut closed. Is there something wrong with the shutter mechanism or do I have the camera on some sort of high sensitivity setting? Is this what they call a sticky shutter? I tried running SDM build of Chdk and it didn't help so I am guessing its not a firmware issue. The camera has the newer firmware on it btw.

The camera was apparently a store demo and looks like it has never been used. The seller agreed to give me a full refund, but I have to make a 120km round trip. With 2 trips, one to pick it up and one to return it, I'll be out $30+ in gas and no camera in hand. Does Canon warranty cover it if I didn’t buy it from a dealer? Is there a recall for this defect? I had a CCD replaced in Minolta for free that I also got off eBay as it was covered under the recall. I really appreciate your input.

Thanks

If the camera came with Canon warranty then Canon would certainly honor it, however if it was a gray import then you would have rely on the seller.
