Good evening all,

I have finally given the lens a good test run after initial thoughts that it might have had some focusing problems... but alas, no, it was my inability to stand far enough away from the things I wanted to photograph.
Anyway, I have given it a little go through the Coot-tha botanical gardens and it seems like it is going to be a really nice lens to use. The one thing for me is that this is my first real telephoto lens so I have to get used to the much smaller DOF when shooting up close. DOF is paper thin compared to my other lens... but, much different to use compared to WA lenses.

One thing I am most impressed in is the speed of the AF. I have been just mucking about with it on AI Servo and just picking random targets and grabbing a quick shot while Tats was driving, and this thing just gets everything. Most impressed.

Heres a quick shot that I took, not all that happy with the shot, but the lens is nice. I missed the focus slightly, and didnt get it right on the little bee.

Anyway, I will post better results when I can produce some...

My first phototax for the new digs. :D Taken at a party I attended last night, and is my nifty's first real workout. ExIF is still intact.

As for ubuntu and linux in general; just this morning I've been pondering ditching my windows environment here at home (again!) and going linux (again). Seems to be a bit of a cycle I am in. Have flip-flopped maybe 5 or 6 times over the last few years.

When and if i get my desktop machine up and running again, it wont be seeing a windows install, thats for sure...

ahhh Ubuntu, I absolutely hate BROWN!

Ubuntu Studio is black and no brown :p

dpastern wrote in post #5767429 (external link)
but if you install Ubuntu, then you get Gnome rammed down your throat (no option to install anything else at install point).

I kind of like Gnome. Its certainly come a long way since I last used it. KDE was well, nice but i never really liked it that much

I've been using Linux on/off since Redhat 5.2, circa 97.

Ahh... Red Hat. I remember 5.1 :|

Personally Im really liking Ubuntu, because well, I dont want to fiddle with it or anything, I just want it to work solidly, which it is doing right now so Im happy enough.

Ahh, I know that plant! We have a few in our garden. Cool. I mainly find Lynx spiders on them, the occasional grasshopper, and sometimes plant bugs of some sort.

Thanks John

One of these Dave;):p Quite a lot of buds on them at the moment, so there should be plenty of blooms in a week or so.

Well, I'm formulating a battle plan for getting Debian on the box as we speak :-) Back to the *real* thing. I see no reason to keep Ubuntu, given my grievances.

On a totally different subject here are some shots from the weekend. I really liked the colours on the first but think the shot would be better with a different angle, ie from the top a bit more

No.1 Cotton Harlequin Bug

No.2 Waiting in Ambush.

Oooh very nice all the same Greg. I've not seen any harlequins out this way, but then I need to work on my bug spotting skills somewhat.

I think that's the REAL choice in Linux distros. People need to be less evangelical about particular distros and just advocate linux in general as a real alternative. (Although personally I don't think Linux is ready for the desktop in some areas - creative industries in particular).

Evenin' all!

Nice pics in the past few pages. 'Grats, too, Scott, on the new glassage.

Took a few pics myself but have yet to look through them. Liking the 40D very much though - just figured out how to focus in live view. Gave the 6.5 fps a run yesterday and nephew's football (soccer) - wow, soon chewed up the 8 gig card.

Oh, and I found out too that the remote trigger for the 400D doesn't fit the 40D. Anyone got any suggestions, ie preferred brand etc for the 40D?

The Canon one is very pricey. I bought a Adidt one from the bay of ease. Did a quick google and Adidt seems to have vanished.

I think there are other 3rd party ones out there.

OK, thanks Greg. The one I had was bay of ease, too, and seemed OK. I saw a similar one for 40D earlier today (on the blackberry) from Cameras Direct although can't find it now (on the PC)

Just wondered about general opinion of all the options out there.

There was a "name the phobia" discussion soon after I took that photo. Turns out someone there was in fact scared of clowns... they didn't look too comfortable.
