I didnt notice what had happened until he told me.

Oh and i found out that the phone problem isnt just me. Optus has had something very very very bad go wrong with their line between sydney and here. Which seems to have knocked out most of the state's and far northern NSW's phone and internet services. It also means that three and virgin are down along with them.

The most recent contact from someone with any real sounding information said it could last a day or a week. Even the 11am ETA for repair that was thrown around earlier could spell disaster for some people. Heck, as a last resort, I dialled 000 from my mobile and had no connection.

Hmm... Im guessing quite a few people might be using Optus or iinet or some other optus related provider for their internets...

Possible fix by 11am. Seems to have affected all of QLD and parts of NSW and VIC. And others cant dial 000 either. Could be a bit of a disaster day for a lot of people.

I'm with iiNet (at home) and work mobile and work phones with Optus. We can't make any calls, but can receive some. Weird. My home (iiNet) network servers are unreachable. It's affecting business. Fortunately our work ISP is bigpond - first time I've ever said that!

Seems that the fiber was cut on the gold coast at about 8 this morning. the optus network was already running on its back up after another part of the network failed last night.

The telstra 2g network is starting to go now as well as all the 3 customers start switching their phones to roaming to use that one.

But you still have the internets ;)

Id imagine that dad is having a quiet day at work. They are all on Optus through the government.

Sounds like its the second big screw up like this from Optus this year. Just this time, a billion times worse.

It's not always the carrier's fault. I had a friend who operated a drilling rig for a geotech engineer and they bored right through an optical fibre cable and took out half of Brisbane a few years ago. Cost his company something like $30k - but that's what insurance is for I guess.

Something like what is happening now happened in January but it was on a smaller scale. I think it only affected 1000 or so mobile and internet customers. This time however, its the whole state plus parts of others.

Well bugger me. It's up. At least my iiNet home servers are up as of a minute or so ago.

Let us know if it stays up.

From following the thread on Whirlpool, they have been in the process of laying some temp cable down. Some people have been getting mobile coverage back too, but not being able to call or send/receive messages.

Edit: here is why iiNet is back up

Dear Whirlpool,

We're working with an alternate provider, PIPE, to get some bandwidth restored to Queensland. Hopefully we're only moments away from getting QLD back online and browsing.

LOL - The internets go down and it throws a whole state into confusion and panic. How the times have changed.
