I got the sx100 on sale and really love it. I got lots of compliments on my snapshots and people ask what camera I have. I personlly think a lot of it is the photographer, but it still boils down to being able to take good pics with a simple p&s. I had slr's in the past and kind of poo poo'ed p&s cameras. As it turns out I have found they are more fun than a s&s, mainly because I have it with me. I never took much candid people pics in the past but am having fun doing that as well.

It can't do everything the high end cameras do but surprizes me since i have gotten used to it's limitations and strengths. I have AA rechargable batteries that I have gotten for my gps's and headlamps so battery useage is a non-issue for me. The flash cycling can be a little annoying but I can deal with it. I am really surprized at the quality of the little movies I can make with it. I wish I had something like this when my parents were alive.

I recently purchased an S5is and was having the same debate, although I also was choosing between the Rebel XT as well.
I will give you the reasons I went with the S5 over the sx100
More zoom
Hot Shoe
4 batteries instead of 2 which means faster shooting especially with flash
the ability to zoom while shooting video
there are a lot of adapters and lenses
built in flash has much longer distance
there were actually a couple others that I can't think of right off the top of my head, but it came down to the only pros I could see with the sx100 over the S5 was price and smaller size.
The sx100 is a great camera, I am actually thinking about picking one up to keep on me more when I don't want to lug around the S5, sometimes while hiking it would be nice to have more of a pocket camera, but I am extremely happy with my S5.
I mostly used this camera to get my feet wet in photography, my next purchase will probably be a Rebel or better...

well, this debate of the choice between the 2 models will never end.

but at the end of the day, are you - the photographer, happy using it ? Can you product the results that are within or beyond expectation ?

so far, my humble investment on the SX100IS had paid off. Only 2 peeve are that the flash recycling time is slower and it does not have an underwater housing.

But then, nobody is perfect.:p

Have you looked into one of these. I think it is the WP310 model that would accommodate the SX100:

Canon 20D w/grip, 300D, Powershot SX100 w/HF-DC1 flash, Canon 70-200 f/2.8L, 85 f/1.8, 17-55 f/2.8 IS, 50 f/1.8, 580EX and some other stuff...

Yes, I just took a look at it. I am afraid that despite the roaring report on this product by a diving instructor, I really have no faith in it. Good against the pool side shots by daddy for their kids. I am a scuba diver who will go to about 40m max. This contraption will not last very long at those depts

I had owned about 3 canon u/w housing over various PnS DC models in the past 8 years. All housing are made of hard plastic with support "beams" that rest on all parts of the camera. The logic for this complicated setup was that water pressure will dent the camera, which could render your zoom lens / buttons from not working. Anyone who had used those cheap disposable "water-proof for 5 m" camera will know what i mean. Go a bit deep and you cannot even turn the film advance knob.

So, if it is not from Canon or a reputable u/w housing maker, I wouldn't try it.

..The viewfinder in the S5 is yet another screen view actually, and My eyes can't focus on that anymore. However, I accidentally discovered today that wearing my reading glasses makes it sharp once again...

Try using the dioptre (sp?) adjustment wheel next to the viewfinder. It should clear it right up even without your glasses.

Pretty pricey, though.

Very pricey indeed.

The quality is build to be like a tank and I have a lot of respect for this brand. But i think it is a bit outside my reasonable budget.

....someday ....someday....

Those are hard to find nowadays. I guess he hasn't considered the S3. I wondered the same thing myself. I'd get a S3 or S5. But for me personality, I got the S5 because I'm a woman. And felt the need to have all the "bells and whistles" otherwise, S3 It would have been for me.

I'm already impressed with the S5 functions (and price) and I've only had it a month & bonus: CHDK programs

Interesting thread.. But im wondering, if the sx100is is so great, why is it SO cheap?! I bout an sd870is 2 weeks ago and im SOO close to going to best buy and exchanging it this afternoon for an sx100is. The sd870 was $300 and the sx100is is only $230, but it seems to have SO many more options. Yeah, its a little bigger, but who cares. SD870 has widescreen, but I think i could live without that. Would image quality be the same? My sd870 takes some very high quality shots.

a lot of times you will pay more for a smaller camera, and a rechargeable lithium battery, but I don't know enough about that specific camera off the top of my head to give any other reasons it would be more expensive
