Just wondering about Grey cards and Landscape Shots.

With a setting or rising sun, would it make a difference if I custom WB with a Grey card or should i not worry about it? Does anyone on here use a grey card for landscape or generally outdoors?

Thanks in advance.

My take is that unless the lighting is mixed or awkward, i dont worry about taking a WB.

For example, if you get some street lighting mixed in with the sunset, it might be worth doing a custom WB but not if its only sunlight.

Having said that, shoot RAW and try different using the different WB settings, they can make a huge difference.

RAW & tungsten pre-set for me. The "correct" WB for a shot isn't always the "Right" WB for a shot. You're the judge of what your image should look like, & why correct that nice, warm light? ;)

PhotosGuy is right. Properly doing a WB may take away from the 'mood and effectiveness' of a photo. Again, it's your personal preference. If you would like to have a grey card, I suggest a WhiBal (google it). you can get a WhiBal that is about the size of a credit card on a lanyard for $30 and it works excellent. Always shoot Raw and use DPP or whatever software you prefer to set the WB. :)

I'd suggest that you save the $30, & my gray card stays at home. If you shoot white paper ON THE METER READING, it will photograph gray, just what the cam needs for Custom WB. Use that exposure for the WB set-up.
Gray Card…White Paper. What’s best?
