Panoramic Photography Help!

What would be the best lense to use for panoramic? Is there any great sites or books on the subject?

I use my 17-40 at 17 and crop the top and bottom of the image. Any wide-angle lens can be used like this. It's a lot simpler than trying to stitch shots together.

a camera, some lenses, various paraphernalia...
