I shoot large groups outdoors and never use lights, but I have shot in large rooms, considering the hanger of the Enterprise at the Air & Space Museum in Dulles. I used 2 speed lights with large umbrellas for bounce, and let me assure you, those were quite adequate, and they don't allow any electrical cords there. You do with what you have.

Lighting is an art and a science. Let those here help you as many of us have used the equipment we recommend. Some of us can afford very expensive lighting, I cannot. So, I've made up the difference with some skill. Don't underestimate the speedlites.

That's why I recommended the umbrellas, but the OP seems determined to use softboxes. That's fine, except it gets EXPENSIVE... :)

Knowing your budget range would help. 580's are pretty expensive. You can buy a 1 head strobe kit for about the same cost or even a little less. More power.

Something less expensive, like the Sunpak 383 or the Vivitar 285HV might be a better idea for off-camera portable studio setup. Under $90 USD each at B&H...

If you want something fast to setup, consider a "folding softbox" or something like a Photek Softlighter - basically an umbrella with a diffuser, able to be quickly set up on location.

For a nice softbox setup that doesn't cost a lot of money I would suggest a Photoflex Multidome (medium - 24x36") and an Alien Bees Softbox Grid. The Photoflex SB is much better than the AB one, yet their grid fits it perfectly. This is the setup I recently put together and it works great (in fact I have two identical ones).

Are you shooting your 580EX II through a softbox? If so, are you liking the lighting it can produce?
