Hello all,

First of all I would like to introduce myself. My friends call me Jonny, all of you can do the same.

So, here's my story: I have been told for many years that I have an eye for imaging which is why I do it every day at work as a Microscopist. With that in mind, I want to warn all of you that I am by far not your typical Photographer. I dabble in anything I can get my hands on. The equipment I us is as follows: Canon G7 which I LOVE! I have some pictures from my old Canon S80... i loved it but it got stolen. Both of them have underwater cases. I have also been trying out some HDR imaging with my canon. I also take pictures with my Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and my laser scanning confocal microscope. I have been told for a while that I should get some of my photography either sent to magazines or printed and sold in a gallery. I blew it off at first, but more recently I really think I like the idea of printing and putting my images in a gallery. Here is my idea with that.

I dont really like the idea of putting a trademark on the actual photo. Is this right? Should I? Can I just put something on the back? I don't even know what the proper signing is for gallery photos. Please give any input you can on this.

Here is my idea for mounting. I want to get these printed in large format and then mounting them to a foam board. I have seen some photographs at work like this and I love the look. Let me know what you think of this.

I think those are the only questions I have for now... Any other input you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Since I'm sure all of you want to see some of these images, here is the link to my flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jonnysax/ (external link)

Welcome. I am semi new here... Takes a while to get your feet wet. But everyone here is very nice. But very honest.

Nice pictures... Interesting visuals.

My thoughts on copyrighting. The imagins are your vision. I would copyright them for the net at least. Without it you have no proof that they are yours. Now I know that some people can edit out the copyright, but if you place it just right, removing it will completely change the the composition of the image. IMO.

Again, welcome!!

I would suggest using a watermark over the image at 20% opacity. Mine is oriented diagonally across the image. It is visible but not obnoxious. It is almost impossible to remove this and have anything usable.

I can't answer your questions, but I did view your flickr photostream. Nice work.

Thanks everyone! So what about if i want to make prints and display them in a gallery? something very subtle like a small symbol in a corner and then put more info on the back? I dont really know what the standard gallery style is.

I wouldn't expect to see a copyright on a print.. only on a web gallery. If it's there on a print, it should be very small. The best advice is to go to a gallery or art show where you think you might be selling your work, and see how other people do it.

I would simply put it on the back for a gallery print. You might wish to include an information tag with the print name, copyright, your name and contact info and perhaps price.

Thanks everyone! I actually saw the same style of presentation i want to use the other day in a gallery. It was a black wall with foam-mounted large photographs which were spaced out from the wall about an inch and had a nice little title card and description next to it, which was also spaced out from the wall a little. very simple and modern looking

I spent many years designing and building exhibits.
Mount your photos on foam board with 3M spray 77 (don't try substituting the cheap stuff). Leave a border around the work that you can trim later. When you adhere it, spray both surfaces (carefully) and then stick them together. Use a rubber roller on the whole print. Trim it and paint the edges with magic marker or cap them neatly with black photo tape. Cut some 3/4" strips of ply or whatever and adhere them to the back with hot glue. Mount them horizontally near the top and bottom. You can then mount the whole thing with adhesive velcro or for a more durable installation you can cut mating wedges for the top strip and mount one on the wall and one on the print. Another way is to use metal tubing (chrome or copper or painted black) to serve as a stand off from the wall. Run a long screw through the front of the print and through the stand off and into the wall. This could be a toggle bolt. Using varying lengths can produce a very interesting effect.
Good Luck with your project. :)
