Ok, here it is.

I'm looking to buy my first DSRL camera but, being new to photography I'm not exactly sure what a beginner should start out with. I've been researching a lot of cameras and lenses but, all the choses and features are too overwhelming; I don't know what I'm looking for.
What I'm interested in is nature and wildlife photography.

Now, I've read the Canon EOS 30D and Canon EOS 400D / Digital Rebel XTi are good cameras but, I really don't know why or if they'll right for me.

Do you think you could help me out?
What do you suggest?

If possible, I would suggest going to a local dealer(s) and talk, touch, and play until you find the one that's right for you. Also play with various lens options, etc.

You may pay a few bucks more locally, but the assistance and support will be worth it.

Buying a camera is a fairly personal experience. Cameras are not one size fits all. Bodies come in different sizes, different shapes and styles, are made by different manufacturers, and they are designed for different purposes and certainly different budgets.

Begin by deciding what you hope to do with your camera. Sports, portraits, landscapes...whatever. Once you have determined what you plan to shoot...then it becomes time to ask around about which cameras best suit that purpose.

Armed with some recommendations...look at your budget, you may be able to rule some choices out instantly. Not everyone can afford a 1Dsmk3 or a Noink D3....Once you have culled the field a bit...you can begin the hard part. You really, really need to go to a camera store and physically handle your choices. There is nothing worse than buying something, only to discover that it is too big or too small, it is too heavy or too light, the controls are poorly placed, it feels too cheap or any of a host of other issues.

Regardless of brand, pick the camera that feels the best to you. If you like the way it fits and feels, you are more than likely going to enjoy using it. If it feels awkward to you....the thing is just going to end up sitting on the shelf...and with the price of cameras....that is one dang expensive bookend.

If you're new to photography, you might be happier with one of the simple, yet capable, Canon point-and-shoots such as the A590 IS (external link) or others in the line of their A-series cameras. If you want to get a DSLR, you'll find the Rebel XT (external link) is available for a low price, as little as $400 with a lens (external link) at several stores.

If you do not mind buying used, buy a 20D or 30D, a 20D is the standard on which the 30D and 40D were built on and it is an excellent camera that although released like 4 years ago, still doesn't show its age.

The 30D is basically the 20D MKII or 20Dn model, Essentially the same camera except for some software changes and a bigger screen.

You can buy them used for about $450 to $650 and they are excellent.

For a first dSLR lens, I recommend the Canon 28-135 IS lens. Get comfortable with a lens like that, then decide on which direction to go.

Check out these many examples of what that lens does with basically Rebel's and or 20/3040D cameras. https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=188563
