Have you tried mixing one Qflash and a 580EXII on the other for groups?
Yes. Many times. Groups, couples, singles. Works well with both bounced into umbrellas, after you practice getting the output reasonably even. For groups you want easy 1:1 lighting, so E-TTL Ratios is no value. If they are both set on Manual, then you move the QF further back if you can't get output even.
The QF, you fire with a 15' household prong PC cord from camera.
The problem is how to get the 580EX off the camera in an umbrella.
You need another 580EX as Wireless Master, or ST-E2 Wireless Master, or 430EX as slave, or something to fire the Canon off camera flash.
Alternative #1 to using PC cable from camera to QF - if you have QF d13w/d23w - use a QF51 extension cable to the QF, and then use a cheap $60 Vivitar 285 flash in the other umbrella triggered with a hotshoe slave eye. Both on Auto, or Manual.
Alternative #2 is to use 580EX on camera bounced, or the off camera shoe 2 cord close to camera in a small umbrella, with the QF far off camera, in umbrella, triggered by a WEIN digital slave SSLD, which ignores the Canon pre-flash.
I am believer in "one good QF light" and use all sorts of ways to exploit using one QF mixed with Canon hotshoe. Since I got Pocket Wizards, I was selling the PC cable and Wein SSLD on FM, but no takers: http://www.fredmiranda.com …47087/0?keyword=x#5772768
Shameless plug, if you're interested.
