Okay......here are some pretty basic questions. What ways do you under or overexpose a shot on the 40D. ISO adjustment? EC? my understanding of the adjustment when you hit the ISo button is if you adjust it up 1/3 it is adjusting the flash...is that right? I know someone will tell me to read the manual and I have done that. I also have the book by Busch. Just needing some help. Thanks

I usually shoot my 40D spot-on... sometimes EC +1/3 or +2/3, but that's about it.... only full ISO stops, though.

On the 5D, I tend to shift to +1/3 or +2.3 a lot more to get the right exposure in my eyes, but that's my choice...

rhodesx6,
If the flash is not popped up or no external flash is mounted or switched off, then it is exposure compensation (EC).
When the flash is popped up or an external flash is mounted and on then it is flash exposure compensation (FEB).
EC controls the camera meter results.
FEB controls the power of the flash.

So to your question:

FEC or EC both will under or overexpose a shot on the 40D ;)

Did that help? ???

Underexpose = give less exposure for light available, therefore you could

  1. Meter a scene, then turn down the light but use the metered readings
  2. Use a smaller f/stop than metered
  3. Use a faster shutter speed than metered
  4. Use a lower ISO than assumed for the meter reading.
Overexposure is simply the inverse of all of the above!

  1. Higher intensity light than metered
  2. Use a larger f./stop than metered
  3. Use a slower shutter speed than metered
  4. Use a higher ISO than assumed at the time of the meter reading

FEC and EC simply result in #2 or #3 happening!
