I just got my new 40D today and was wondering what people typically do with their memory cards and deal with file names / numbers.

I started with a fresh card and of course my pictures started out as IMG_0001.jpg this of course is a duplicate from when I first got my 30D. I've been told that if I put a card in that is say from my 30D it will pick up from where I left off?

Assuming that this is correct is there a way to tell how many actual pictures the body has taken? I only have 3300 actuations on the 30D body but don't want the 40D to show that as well. I know you can reset it but was wondering how people deal with it.

I shoot and batch rename when downloading to the computer so numbering in camera is never an issue.

I believe that the numbering sequence will roll over at 9,999 (that is, the name of the file after IMG_9999 will be IMG_0001). Since 10K is much lower than the number of actuations the body is rated for, you're going to have to do some calculations to determine your total actuations in any case. So I'd suggest picking whatever method works best for you, without regard to actuations.
Personally, I import using the stock file names, but into date stamped folders, so I don't worry about the actual filename. Mostly I find images by keywords or date.

If you actually start with canon100 or whatever the folder is called it will go to 101 after it rolls over, so its still possible to tell pretty easily total actuations provided you can keep the numbering straight. I personally cant be bothered since I swap cards back and forth between my and friends cameras, when the shutter dies the shutter dies.

I agree on the shutter death--there are certainly many folks who have more actuations than their camera is rated for. The only thing I can think of is that it's useful for resale, but then the buyer has to trust your figure, since it's not unalterable like the actuation count in EXIF data that 1D models correctly write.

However, I am curious about the folder/file naming. I'm used to the structure on G2 and G6, where the camera creates Canon100, and dumps roughly 99 pictures in that, then creates 101, and repeats. With the Rebel series, does it really continue using Canon100 for 9999 pictures, and then create Canon101 and start writing IMG_0001-IMG_9999 in that, and repeat? Still, you'd have to preserve the Canon10x folder structure to keep track of actuations (or make a note of it, at least)?
