Hey,

Just bought one of these listed in the title - it says Hoya HMC Super 67mm PL-CIR.

What is the difference between this and the ones that I've seen labelled similarly but with PRO1 on them?

Should I be taking this back for an exchange? Is there a better one on the market.

I paid $149.99 CDN plus taxes :(

I'd suggest taking it back and ordering from hvstar.net. Filters are ridiculously overpriced at the best of times, and I've never seen good prices on anything decent in Canada.

The Pro1 filters have a very thin mount, which is useful for wide angle lenses. As far as I know, Hoya only makes the Pro1 filters with the "DMC" coating, but hvstar still has lots of SHMC Pro1 filters. There is some debate over whether Hoya is trying to pull a fast one, since the SHMC coating appears to be better than the DMC, but I don't know if the question has been definitively answered. I stick with the SHMC Pro1 filters, even though they're a bit more expensive than DMC.

A couple of options:

http://hvstar.net …Action=VIEWPROD&ProdID=70 (external link)
This is functionally identical to your current filter at half the price. It has the Pro1 thin knurled mount.

http://hvstar.net …Action=VIEWPROD&ProdID=15 (external link)
The same filter with the "DMC" coating, and a lot cheaper.

Shipping is a bit expensive, so it's best if you pick up a few items at once, but either way you'll save a lot of money over what you paid for your current filter. It took under two weeks for my order to arrive here (Waterloo, ON).

You say here that they only make the Pro1 filters with the DMC coatings, but that you stick with the SHMC Pro1 filters. By deduction, this means that yours is SHMC but also DMC because it is a Pro1? That is what I'm confused about :(

I can't seem to find an SHMC Pro1 filter here in Canada at Henry's - my wife gave me a gift certificate, so I was using that.

That's the filter I got. Love it. B&H was charging 3 times as much for the same thing.

Shipping was only $9 for me, I believe. Not bad at all. It did take 2 weeks to get here though.

Sorry to be confusing. There have been threads about this in the past, with comparisons between the two. Hoya used to make the "Pro1" filters with SHMC coatings, and they were identified as such. It seems they've switched to DMC exclusively and dropped the SHMC Pro1 line, and any "Pro1" filter is probably DMC unless otherwise noted (as in the case of the hvstar filters). For instance, the Pro1 filters 2fiter.com sells are all DMC. It's more confusing since a lot of places are still selling the non-Pro1 SHMC filters!

I'm not sure if you want to switch since it was a gift card, but filters are very expensive at Henry's. The same filter is $95 at B&H, and even that looks overpriced compared to hvstar.

I'll see if I can dig up some threads for you later tonight, but I'm a bit busy right now.

One word of warning, I purchased a while back a Hoya Pro1 CPL from HVStar for £30 + shipping, adding more items to my cart just doubled, trippled the shipping etc etc.. so that was a joke especially being as the item I was adding was a hotshoe bubble level, something that wouldnt have effected the package weight very much, I send off lots of items worldwide & work with eccommerce software, their cart system shouldnt double the prices, maybe they have fixed it now, I dont know.

The main problem was the actual filter, it was VERY poor indeed, it flared up in the worst way possible, there was no way it was a "genuine" Hoya, despite them saying it was, but I guess common sense should have told me that it cant be that good for £30, when the same thing from a reputable online store in the UK is £130!!

But lots of people say they have good experiences of HVStar, but I thought you should hear both sides too ;-)a

Ok, I just got this one from hvstar. It's not "DMC", but it doesnt have PRO1 in the title either, so I guess its just S-HMC?

Should be a good one. I believe that Hoya discontinued the SHMC line and now everything is going to the DMC Pro1 line, but that CPL should be awesome.

I'm hoping so, and whoever was talking about the shipping doubling, I had the same problem. I added some things like a lens cleaning cloth and an adapter ring, and the shipping shot to $21 from $9 for just the filter. I removed the $2 in items after that, just wasn't worth it.

Sounds like they havent fixed that issue then, there is no way shipping would double or triple from adding something so lightweight, regardless of what country it has to be shipped over to... looks like they need to rethink the way they have designed their cart system as the postage is a complete hash!

I don't think it's a mistake. It seems to be about $9-10/filter or $3/small item. They're still much cheaper than anywhere else.

Hoya is also expected to put out their latest and greatest filters later this month, their "HD" filters. They've been delayed a time or two already, so who knows when we'll see them. You can read a little about them here (external link). Could be worth waiting for.....

$211 is a tad much for a CPL, but we'll see
