I've read several threads asking about whether to get a 52 or 58mm adapter for an S5 IS. I have a 52mm adapter from my now defunct A80 (which departed this life via an unscheduled "donation" to the river gods...but I enjoyed the thunder out of it for years before it's untimely meeting with river water, so the pain of the loss is not as severe, just feel stupid for becoming so complacent with waterproof protection ). Anyway, I just tried the 52mm on my recently acquired S5 and I just don't get it. How does one put a 52mm adapter on this unit? I've some basic lens converters and filters that I wouldn't mind to continue to use, with the pre-knowledge of high potential of vignetting, until I can recover from the camera purchase (not to mention the continuing costs of replacing the remainder of my electronic gee-dunks that were also a river god "donation," i.e. GPS, cell phone, PMP, etc. Yes, it was a painful, expensive float trip but what's life if you're not living it?)

So, perhaps there are two different production models of the S5? One that can accept a 52mm and one that takes the 58? While I know I could get a 58->52 step-down ring, I see no reason to do so as I would expect a step-down would almost guaranty a vignetting problem what with the additional adapter length.

Input would be most appreciated.

Unfortunately, you'll have to buy another adapter. As long as you get a 52mm adapter for the S5, the filters you have should still work. But since the S5 has a larger lens to begin with than the A80, the mounting bracket for the adapter is completely different.

Many on here have had very good luck with Lensmate, myself included. Here is the order page for S5 adapters from there: http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/order_S2_1.html (external link) You should be able to notice the difference in the look of the 52mm for the S-series vs what yours looks like for the A80. Price of a new adapter from Lensmate will run $24.95 plus shipping.

Jen, if I understand your answer (correct me if I'm wrong...anyone), the reference to 52mm or 58mm is not related to the size of the adapter where it connects to the camera "body" but is the ID of the leading end of the adapter (the end where the accessories are screwed on). Each camera "body" will have there own specific type of mount for the adapter and just because I may have a 52, or even a 58, does not guaranty that it would fit on another camera model or make requiring the same size.

"I see," said the blind man. I thank you for the clarification!

You are exactly correct. The size only refers to what size accessories (filters, lens converters, etc) will fit the adapter. Glad I could help.
